this morning I had a letter saying my meter is an old model and we are phasing it out, it asks me to ring them to arrange an install date, it looks legit
my questions are what are the advantages of moving to smart meter and what if any are the disadvantages of installing this smart meter
as they say if its not broke why fix it?
am I forced to have this installed, or can I just carry on using my current meter?

You are forced to have a new meter installed. You can opt out of the smart meter. Some idiot ex MPs voted against making them compulsory (Lib Dems ) so you have the right , at the moment, to refuse.Watch out in the future for metering service charges for refusniks of approx £60 a year.0

Good morning NittyGritty,
That deffo sounds like our letter,
May I just ask please, what sort of meter do you have? as you say 'we are phasing it out' makes me think it may be an older Heatwise meter?
But certainly give us a call and we'll advise what we can offer and when

I have nothing against smart meters in principle, however until a universal smart meter is developed I will stick to the old type for the time being.
I am quite capable of monitoring my usage and happy to give monthly readings on line so see little advantage to changing .
My friend got a smart meter only for it to become a " dumb" meter when he changed supplier.
Where do you get the evidence of £60 meter services charge in future?0 -
Personally, I would wait until the final smart meter communications standard is agreed. Unless you stay with E.oN, then there is the possibility that when you switch your meter may longer be smart. Legally, you do not have to accept a smart meter. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

yeah I think I will stay on my current meter for the time being, theres nothing wrong with it, and as other poster said I,m quite happy to give meter reads every so often
until such time I,m forced to have one.0 -
How do we know the RF emissions are as said on the tin? Who monitors the output of these devices? Is it Volkswagon?I am the Cat who walks alone0

That's exactly why I am holding out on getting a smart meter.
But don't get me wrong, once they are universal I will be getting it swapped out as soon as I'm offered. (I'm lazy)
Also I'll be just fine health wise with having a smart meter as I have used a mobile phone since I was 14 to no ill effect and it uses the same system as that to communicate
(I only felt the need to post that last bit in case any of the "tinfoilers" decide to rock up and explain how they are going to kill everyone :rotfl:)0 -

... The pace at which they aren't rolling them out and the current comms difficulties ??- I'll have a bet with you that it won't happen in my lifetime:rotfl:0 -
Let them install a smart meter, then switch to another supplier and it becomes dumb again.
Once you've done that, does it stop transmitting its regular readings and allow you to remove your tin foil hat though?...
And, does it get its smartness back if you switch back??I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I personally think SmartMeters will be used to implement (compulsory) peak/off-peak pricing, where energy will cost more at times of peak usage. Hence I will be refusing a smartmeter if I am offered it because I suspect such a peak/off peak pricing will end up costing me more.0
