I had my first Ocado delivery with the bags charge last night and, as suspected, there were a couple of them who were near empty. There was one with only one item in it. So what I did was to move the few items from the two near empty bags in another bag, and give back those two plus 3 more from last week to the driver. So I suppose to get a refund for 5 bags (out of 6).
I asked the driver how they will proceed, and he told me they will send me an email to tell me how they will proceed with the refund. That email supposed to have been sent yesterday or today, but so far nothing.
So, just in case, I have asked for a refund for the bags online.
I will still use some of them for my bin, as I am suspicious of cheap bin liners, in my mind they might be flimsy because they are cheap (I had a good example of it with tin foil).
I have been going shopping today and they have all asked if I wanted a bag. I had to think twice before answering, I am not used to it yet.:)
But I can see a time, while on a shopping spree, when I will simply stop shopping and go home if the bags I am bringing with me are full, instead of carry on shopping like before, in the knowledge that I will have to pay for a bag.
I think I will save a few bob here:D
Update : just got the email, at 20h15, got my money back for 5 bags. So it worked after all.
I still don't know if I need to ask for a refund online or trust the driver though.....0 -
Popped into town in the week, lots of 'do you need a bag, we have to charge 5p for one' ironic thing is i had already got into the habit of taking a cotton bag with me anyway - I was surprised at he number of staff who seemed surprised I had a bag, seems some are still getting used to it.
I'm sure some will grumble on about it but we'll all get used to it in the end.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Went into my town this week for the first time since the 5p charge came in.
It was nice not to be given a bag for just one item.
Only in Holland and Barret was I asked if I wanted a bag. I said no but their bags are paper so I most properly would have not been charged for it.
I think the most interesting thing I saw which gave an I idea of how it going was in Sainsburys. Whilst waiting in a queue due to the fact they were low on staff to man the tills, I was observing the bag situation.
Some people were using their own bags. Saw one person with a mound of bags at the ready.
But most of the people were buying the bags for life. These were not 5p but 12p. Seen these type of design of bags before, anybody will be lucky to get about 3-4 shops out of them before they will need replacing.
Everything was going orderly in all the shops I visited. Nobody was throwing a wobbly at the tills.
But according to the newspaper, The Daily Mail:D, the world was going to end when this charge come in.

What will the stores do with all the money they save from not buying the 'included in price' bags that have been used up to now. They must be saving a fortune, perhaps they will give their staff a pay rise.0

The Daily Mail has indeed been critical of the specifics regarding the current English rules. On the other hand, it has been running a Banish the Bags campaign since 2008.

I was behind a chap in a queue loudly reciting the law regarding loose items and carrier bags yesterday.
The assistant manager calmly informed him that in Aldi, there has always been a charge for bags.Only dead fish go with the flow...0 -

i just used to decline a bag before they offered one

paper bags are not affected, the charge is to try and reduce the number of single use plastic bags entering the environment - so we're all free to still shop at H&B ame Primark

if they are the same as normal bags for life, you can get way more than 3-4 shops out of them. I have some bags for life I've had and used for years. They generally only need replacing when a sharp corner of an item tears them. I try to use a couple of stronger bags for such items. You can get at least 3-4 uses out of the so called 'single use bags' but the issue was people choosing not to reuse them as they were free
did a car boot yesterday and was rather pleased to be able to offload some if the carrier bags I had stashed at home. Hope those who wanted a bag will reuse them.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Personally, I think a Banish The Daily Mail campaign would make the world more environmentally friendly !!:D

But I have been told by a family member that despite being made from paper, Mc Donalds charges 5p for their paper bags or did in the drive-through the person had been using.0
