Sainsbury's are also scrapping their 'normal' bags and charging 5p for their bags for life (instead of the now 10p charge). I think this is brilliant, I am sure you could fit quite a few melons in there if you wanted :) it is only 5p...and I am sure it will help people remember to bring their own bags ;)

In a way I'm pleased England has caught up at last, I'm always getting caught out when j go to Scotland with no bags as on holiday. We popped into a sainsburys local the other week when we were in Glasgow, the 5p bags weren't bags for life but deff better quality than the current 'disposable' bags and could be used several times over.

My only grumble is going clothes shopping, personally for me part of the experience is coming out of store with a nice new bag wrapped around your clothes and taking things out of those bags (which I reuse) at home. Plus I might not have gone out with a spare bag intending to make a purchase.
Not quite the same experience saying 'yes just shove my new dress in this old bag' but hey ho. Perhaps it will encourage clothes stores to use more paper bags (incidentally the manufacture processes of paper bags isn't necessarily good for the environment) or I'll just shop in Primark more anyway :rotfl:

The small bags that you put loose fruit and veg are free and will be free after 5/10 as they are a low grade plastic.

Been told by two different supermarkets that unless your raw meat was purchased loose from the butchers counter, the carrier bag isn't free as the other meat is wrapped. But again, can wrap the meat in the free produce bags.

Or do what one of my colleagues has done for her shopping bags. Bought two new bags of life. Wrote a M on one of them for meat and the other one, a C for cleaning products and toiletries.

Sainsburys will have some new 5p bags for life as well as the current 10p ones. My friend that works for them showed me the briefing pack. It looks like this.

All the other supermarkets are changing 5p for those flimsy bags.

If you look at carrier bags, if you see a barcode on them, these will be the 5p bags

If you are buying a coat, dress, suit and other expensive items of clothing, 5p is nothing. Plus if you go to the likes of Debenhams, M&S, House of Fraser, you get a substantial bag for 5p. Then can use that bag to pop in small purchases like batteries, DVD etc.

Buying undies and basic t-shirts, doesn't warrant a separate bag.

Buy a pretty folding bag for clothes.

It is only the thin bags they have to charge for not all bags, they don't have to charge for paper bags nor if their total number of employees are 250 or less.

So your clothing, which would usually come in a thicker bag or a paper bag should not need to be charged for unless the retailer wishes too.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

    Hi,

jee whizz, I just cannot understand why ENGLAND is getting so uptight about the charge.

Ireland, Wales and Scotland have had it for years, just accept it and pay, or save the 5p and take a reusable bag with you.

They (English) say the Scots are tight, jings.

I did ask another poster elsewhere this but didn't get a reply.

I fully understand we English need to realise the bag charge is in force in all other parts of the UK and appears to work well.

But were there really no moans before the first country introduced it? Everyone outside England went into it blindly and happily and didn't ask any questions? And no grumbling now? None at all?

    :A

At the very real risk of repeating myself, I broadly support the charge, and already re-use/use my own bags/shopping trolley in many cases.

But I will now have to buy bin liners so I don't see my environmental impact going down a great deal, and I wonder how many others are in a similar position.

The upcoming 5p bags I am seeing are far superior quality to the current free ones, this is unexpected & good as the potential for re-use increases.

I have been around my nearest shopping centre two days ago, all the small shops are already advertising the 5p charge for bags. Even if they have a choice, they will all charge for their bags.
  • Hi,

how on earth did folks manage years ago before the introduction of carrier bags?

    Anybody remember these?

Does your council not supply you with the free bags for food waste, just get a new roll of them when needed.

Also, those charity bags for clothing, I get about 1 a week through the letter box, are a good size for rubbish.
