Charges for plastic bags

I dont mind the 5p charge, some stores used to charge for them over 20 years ago. The objections I have are paying for a bag in places like debenhams etc when you buy clothes, also the store name being plastered all over them, free advertising I say. I always have a bag for life stored in my everyday bag, just incase.:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o

We have had this in Wales for years. The shop nominates the charity the money goes to so its not a tax and you can probably even suggest charities to stores. When the charge was introduced here our local Morrison supermarket asked shoppers where they wanted the money to go.
loose unwrapped foods are exempt but need to be bagged separately (so in smaller paper or plastic bags). Meat and fish can also be 're-bagged' in smaller plastic bags to prevent any leakage.
Most larger chains and supermarkets should get the rules correct from the start as they already need to do this everywhere else (you English are always so far behind on things like this). There will probably be some misunderstandings in the smaller stores when the scheme starts but it does work and nobody ever complains here.0 -
The cashier was giving me the hard sell to buy a Bag for Life in Tesco yesterday.
According to her a 5p charge would be applied for every plastic bag used from 5th October - even those the customer bring in themselves from home.
Either she was completely stupid or had been informed by management to bulls**t to push sales of bags for life.0 -
Tesco are charging 5p per bag from 5th Oct. The bags are supposed to be of a better quality. There will not be any charge for the small bags at the fruit and veg section. There will be a flat fee for home delivery service which is 40p per delivery no matter how many bags are used, and there is an option for delivery without bags.
Can I just ask everyone to remember that the Bag Charge has been implemented by the government and not the stores. I work on checkout and am dreading the possible backlash!Trying to regain my comping mojo0 -

Not sure where she got that information from - any bags that the customer brings in WILL NOT be charged! And there is def no directions to push bags for life.Trying to regain my comping mojo0 -
I've had a reply
Thank you for your response.
I spoke to my Business Support Team who advised that if you had loose items in your basket and there were no small clear plastic bags available at the store then you would receive one free carrier bag to put all the loose items in. You would not receive 6 carrier bags if you had 6 loose items, you would need to put them all in the one bag where possible.
However, if there are small clear plastic bags available at the store, then you would not receive a free carrier bag as the loose items should be put into those bags. These small bags are free and are available on the produce section and also at the checkout.
I hope this information has been helpful.
Thank you once again for taking the time to contact us.

In the last few weeks I have seen bar codes on carrier bags so they are to be scanned with your shopping.
I managed to scan one by accident the other day.
So any bag that has a bar code will be chargeable.
The bags they use for meat and fish and veggies will not be.

Hi,
jee whizz, I just cannot understand why ENGLAND is getting so uptight about the charge.
Ireland, Wales and Scotland have had it for years, just accept it and pay, or save the 5p and take a reusable bag with you.
They (English) say the Scots are tight, jings.0
