    Hi,

jee whizz, I just cannot understand why ENGLAND is getting so uptight about the charge.

Ireland, Wales and Scotland have had it for years, just accept it and pay, or save the 5p and take a reusable bag with you.

They (English) say the Scots are tight, jings.

No we the English are not tight. It's just that we are now waking up on how we are getting screwed by companies trying to sell us stuff. So we are understandably a bit rattled.

Also for everybody's info, the 5p charge:- 4p will go to charities and 1p will go to the supermarket as administration so it can run the scheme fully funded from the sale of the bags.

Also if English people want to be really tight, by the 6p Asda bags for life. They are strong, can be used multiple times before they are unusable. In my opinion the best bag you can buy.

Then you take the old one back and get a new one at no cost, then use that until you have to replace it. Take that one back and get a new one at no cost, until the end of time.

If this is correct, this is good news.

It is indeed correct as they did n both Wales and Scotland http://www.j-sainsbury.co.uk/media/latest-stories/2011/20110930-sainsburys-upgrades-carrier-bags-as-charging-begins-in-wales/

The bags are also replaceable with new ones when they wear out and the money (which they don't have to charge at all as they are too thick) will still go to charity.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

    You haven't allowed for VAT.

    "What retailers have to do
For every bag that you charge for, you must:charge at least 5p a bag (including any VAT)"

But I think that's what the 1p is for so the 4p goes to the charity without any reduction in the donation. Otherwise the charity could claim back the vat.

The retailer is allowed to deduct "reasonable costs".

P.S. The proceeds of the charge are a VAT output. I don't believe that there any circumstances under which a charity could 'claim back the vat", because the money is coiming in not going out.

    P.S.S It's not 1p in VAT, it's 0.83p in VAT.:)

I saw on their website they will be charging 5p per bags starting in october. They don't seem to have an option to do bagless deliveries.
They will apparently give you a refund for every bags you give back.
I am using the bags for my dustbin, and will carry on using them a it is still cheaper than buying proper bin liners anyway, but will they at least try to fill up the bags instead of putting two items in each bag? Or will they get worse and you will end up with more bags than before?
In case you give the bags back, how will you/they keep track of the ones you give back to make sure you get the right refund?

My carrier sized bin liners cost 50p for a roll of 40 and I know there's even cheaper ones around. Same amount of carrier bags would cost you £2, unless you ordered a LOT of items online under the flat rate charge. But given the green points are currently calculated at 10 items per bag, that's a big shopping bill to save 10p.

I haven't used a plastic carrier in a supermarket for years, unless I was popping in unexpectedly and didn't have a bag on me. Going into the other shops with a reusable bag will take some getting used to though. Got caught out when we went up to Scotland earlier this year and did a bit of holiday shopping, as I hadn't realised the law was in effect there already.

My supermarket already has a bagless delivery option for online order, I expect the others would have to offer this by the time the law comes in.

Edit: rats, looks like they got that covered "For example, you wouldn’t charge for a bag containing an unwrapped blade and unwrapped loose seeds, but adding a box of cornflakes means you’d have to charge."

That's an interesting bag of shopping you have there

I only looked on the Ocado website, where I am doing my shopping.
I am sure if I look around I can find cheaper, but to me doing grocery shopping is a chore, I would not look around shops to find cheaper stuff, I would look at the only place I visit to do shopping once a week, which is the Ocado website.
