You said you didn't understand why they needed longer to process a transcation?
If you are a software engineer you should understand rather well the possibilities of multiple points of failure in a computerised system. You've been given examples of failures on both paper and digital systems now.
You have NO consumer protection against a company taking a little longer to charge you.
You've been told the limits now. If you don't believe the free advice your getting here then I would suggest you do your own research or get your own independent advice. The paid kind from professionals is obviously the most reliable.

I was referring to your personal attack on how I don't understand computers. Working in finance I know they are required to have a fully functioning disaster recovery systems per FSA requirements.

I've been told the limits, yes, however no body has set to link me to an external source that says 30 days, 6 months or whatever. I survive at my job because I question everything.

I am questioning the validity of claiming a credit card authorisation after 59 days. I started here in the hope someone would just link me to the correct resource and I would be like 'oh ok'. Instead nobody seems to have a real answer.

If nobody is able to provide me the answer I am looking for, I will contact more professional resources available to me as a consumer. I will then happily update the relevant wikipedia article incase someone else questions this.

The Food Standards Agency has no such requirements.

    C'mon, you work in finance.

This bloke must really have nothing better to do.

I'm not going to reiterate everything that's been said. You're a total nightmare. Get a life.

Typical example for a charge long after the authorisation would be a hotel booking. You book a room and give your CC number. The hotel will authorise a certain amount, something like one night's charge. If you don't show or cancel within the requested timespan, your card will be charged; even if this is weeks or months later than the original authorisation.

What do you think the train company should have done once they discover they have missed to process a number of charges within the usual time?

The fact that it doesn't exist on MSE, google, which etc. would satisfy most people that such a limit does not exist. You will be hard pushed to prove a negative.

Companies have 6 months to process the transaction
As it happens I've booked hotels for 7 months time (really) and not been charged., both abroad.
One said you don't pay till checkout, the other said they reserve the right to charge anytime between booking and departure.
What happens in this case? Does the authorisation stop after 6 months?
