Yes Molly, it reads powerfully and my eyes respond on more than one level....you already have changes under your belt, life-affirming ones, by being with us all here, you know. It really is that simple.

    Just one step... then another.

    Must go, marmalade calls.

    Marmalade....:D

...now theres summat I rarely allow myself (sugar....and all that......)....but....ummm.....a nice bit of homemade marmalade with a bit of thick peel in it with some nice homemade toast.....ahhhh....lovely....

Loving the contment that comes out of this thread, it is so hard to find in today's world. Patchwork Quilt I do so agree with you that the food tastes better at home and I'm holding on to this for two reasons a) the retirement pension does not run to expensive meals out and cheap ones are utter rubbish b) DGS (10) has just developed a peanut allergy, DD has spent so much time this week just reading labels and it amazing just how much manufactured food has to be avoided, e.g. icecream, stuffing mixes, and even some bread to name just a few. We are all off on holiday (self catering fortunatley) in 3 weeks DV and meals out will definately be off limits. So my pleasures to day are partly focused on this new dimension in our lives.

    1. DD is an excellent cook and very capable of providing suitable alternatives for our DGS.

    2. I too am not without experience of alternative diets, so between us we will be able to provide lots of treats (and staples) for DGS.

    3. I had a lovely morning at the craft demo and learned how to make paper roses which will be a very cost effective way of embellishing my cards.

    4. We thought about lunch out for a treat but the homemade soup and homemade roll we had here would have taken some beating.

    5. An afternoon's crafting - bliss.

Thaks to both Shazza and Ampersand for that poetry. Very sad and it does make you think, doesn't it, that we can be too frugal? In defiance, I put a squirt of my favourite perfume on today.

    Ours for today are

    1) A lie-in this morning. Essential to have one day not ruled by the alarm clock, I think.
    2) A lovely walk with DH this afternoon. We went out for a walk because it was a free outing, researched it beforehand and went somewhere new.
    3) We saw dragonflies, squirrels, froglets, moorhens, orchids (I think) and some very weird trees.
    4) Chips and dhal for me tonight, DH and DS are having pizza with theirs
    5) Lastly, have finally identified the mystery sapling that sprung up beside the garage, using The Easy Way to Tree Recognition by John Kilbracken. I knew it was something 'edible' and it turns out to be a wild cherry. Not sure if I want to keep it, as we already have a huge one, but it does solve the mystery

    Have a lovely evening, folks

    Morning all,

Look forward to hearing what Ollie has been up to.

    1. Reading about HM brocolli soup and other bits, I fancy doing some "making" today, either soup or some Twinks hob nobs. I've never made marmalade but even that sounds tempting.
    2. Trying to limit spending. Such as not sending off for "free" offers just for the sake of it. Less clutter too.
    3. A chilled bottle of wine waiting in the fridge.
    4. Remembering my mum not having washing out on the line on Sundays. Even having the machine on. Unfortunately I need to catch up on the last bits. Will try harder next Sunday.
    5. Remembering that I also need to relax today. Yesterday was manic and I must slow down.

    Hello everybody :hello:

Thanks for your concerns - how humbling to know that people you've never ever met can miss you not being around - (((((((HUGS))))))) to you all for that.

My comp had been giving me a 'bit of aggro' for a while, so I decided to upgrade to a better set-up - that what when it started to really play me up and it made going into forums virtually impossible. I've not totally 'blown the budget' - I got a reconditioned one :money: from Dixons. Same warranty as a brand new one, so nothing to lose there :j.

I see we've got some new people on this thread - so Hi and Welcome to you all :T.

I don't stand a chance of properly catching up with the thread straight away - though I'll have a browse through it as and when I can.

Just a few from me to get me back in the frame:

    1. New comp finally installed and working - at long last!

    2. Baked Banana and Walnut Bread (Mrs Beeton's Recipe) yesterday morning - first time I'd used my lovely new Lakeland Loaf Tin Liners. What bliss not to have to sit cutting up strips of greaseproof paper to try to fit a 2lb loaf tin.

    3. Chilli Minced Beef (whoopsied of course) with peppers/sweetcorn/kidney beans served with SP Penne Pasta for tea last night.

    4. Remembered to take a Garlic Basted Chicken out of the freezer for today's evening meal. I'll make a salad to go with it, using some of my home-grown lettuce and spring onions, with shop bought tomatoes, cucumber and garlic bread.

    5. Had lots of NSD's this week - due to payday looming on Wednesday.

    6. Stitched nametapes on dgk's new school uniforms - dgd1 starts senior school (oh sorry - we have to call it a 'Learning Centre') this time.

    7. Dgd's 11th birthday on Tuesday - so will need to come up with a birthday cake for her tomorrow evening.

    8. Weekend laundry all done and dried before last night's rain started :j.

    9. Noticed that we've got quite a lot of butterflies around the garden this year - I think that the 'demoliton areas' around the estate are now reverting to 'wildflowers/life' at the moment. Isn't it great how quickly these things can happen. OH has spotted bats around in the evenings as well. Also noticed that our evenings are already showing signs of 'drawing in'. The sun was setting behind a huge old tree - it now sets behind the tower block to the left of the tree instead!

Hope everybody has a great money-saving day and that the sun shines for us all.

    love Ollie xxx

Edited to say: I've been experimenting with a head of broccoli (lurking from last weekend!), onions and some frozen chicken stock (needed to use some up as got the SC on at the moment for some more) - cooked and then whizzed-up in the blender.

A rather nice batch of 'Chicken and Broccoli Soup', if I do say so myself :j - added some celery salt, peppers, dried mixed herbs and chives for extra flavour .

REVERBE - I'm pleased to see you coming on here at intervals - I still wonder a bit at intervals how you're getting on and hope things are working out for you...

Thanks. Just busy and not really many pleasures to report. Feeling a bit down - nothing changes, life still the same - no mates, aint seen my OH now for well over a year, still out of work with no prospects. Also had a lot on my mind- flatmate lost his job ages ago and set up in business with his friend. They got done over on a job where they weren't paid and it has crippled flatmate with his mortgage and debts. His friend is a qualified quantity surveyor and can manage to find good paid work here and there but my flatmate is not. He is talking lately about being bankrupt and bailiffs etc. I am losing sleep over it as I will become homeless with nowhere to go and even worried now that bailiffs will take my things as I have no way of proving my cds, digital camera, dvds, portable cd player etc for example are mine and not his.

Also not been out and about much to discover pleasures. Have been spending all day every day last week sorting my stuff and moving it back and forth from our flat to a friends and back etc.Plus it really tires me.

But I am still relatively healthy ( tho have ibs from stress and have a chest infection I think that wont go) and still here. Sweet of you to think of me tho. Thanks.

Hi Reverbe - keep your head up and have a chat with CAB about your property. Pretty sure it won't get taken off you as I think bailiff's have to prove you flatmate as the owner and not the other way round. With regards to mates - my OH doesn't really have any friends outside of work as his old friends are too heavily involved in drugs. He chats to people through his online gaming. I guess you have the guys on here!

    Anyway my OS pleasures;
    1) Reading the new shabby chic thread and realising my home doesn't need to look show-homey to be nice

    2) Attempting to make my own bread - we'll see how that goes

    3) Updating my blog

    4) Having tea ready to put in the oven by midday

    5) Shared a lovely evening last night with OH and feeling really warm inside today as a result!
    Taking baby-steps

hello and welcome to all newcomers. Good to hear from you again Ollie. We have missed you.

Here are my five for today and some from yesterday too:

    1. Have enough meals cooked today to last till the end of the week using all the remaining veg and meat in the fridge.

    2. Cleared the fridge so no wastage when I go away this coming Saturday .

    3. managed to salvage some of the salad plants - after the damage of the hails stones a few days ago.

    4. Sorted the kitchen somewhat - at least have a space now for the small "desktop" freezer

    5. More freezer space with said freezer.

    6. Had a lovely day out meeting a friend for lunch yesterday and afterwards we walked from London West End to Tower Bridge, along the Thames. It was nice just to enjoy the day and a city that sometimes can feel so busy and crowded ad yet have places that can be so relaxing.

    Have a lovely weekend.
