How old is "too old" to have a bath with your children?

As the title really...

How old is too old?

Speaking with people with "No Children", the attitude is that they would never bathe with there Children.

My children seem to think its okay to get into the bath with me at 7.5yrs old (Boy).

They'll figure it out for themselves and no longer join you. Any age. It doesn't matter.

There is no right or wrong age. It should end when either parent or child feels uncomfortable.

If you're happy to bathe with your 7.5yo and he happy to hop in carry on. If you're no longer comfortable it's time to subtly change things. Your child will let you know when he is no longer comfortable by his own actions.

Just wait for the 'OMG, that's immoral' brigade to give their tuppennyworth.

  • I think age 7-9 seems about the right age to me, of course I am biased, that's when my children naturally stopped asking to bathe with either my husband or myself.

Whenever you/child feel it should stop.

DS began wanting to not be seen naked aged 10. DD copied around the same time, aged 8. So no more of me having to cool down my bath as they want to hop in. Woohoo!

  • My eight year old still tries to jump in the bath with me but I stop him before it happens and explain he is too old. I do find it helps if I make him have his bath first. However even if he doesn't get in the bath he stands and talks to me whilst I am in there. It is difficult being a single mum as there is no one downstairs with him to occupy him whilst I am in the bath, he keeps shouting things up the stairs and I find it hard to hear him hence why he comes up.

Like others have said he will stop this sooner or later when he decides he no longer wants to look at his mum in the bath.
  • My 8 yr dd old would happily get in the bath with me. The 11 year old, no chance. It stopped when she was bout 8 or 9. To be honest it's probably more of a space issue in our bath because it's quite small. Both dd's constantly come into the bathroom while im in the bath. Either to go to the toilet or just have a chat. It's a running joke between me and the hubby that I haven't had a bath on my own for 11 years.

If you and your child are both comfortable then it's fine. It nobody else's business. It will stop naturally in the future.

Speaking (typing?!) as a person with "no children", I agree with the above. They'll soon let you know when they don't want to carry on.

I suppose it depends on how functional you see taking a bath. So for me it wouldn't be about age, just that I wanted to take a bath alone.

When my children were young I was only too happy to shut the bathroom door and relax in the bath after they'd gone to bed. Sometimes it's the only 'me time' you can manage in a day.

These days I rarely bath, just shower, but even now I like to have that time to myself for a bit of pampering.

When the child doesn't want to.
    It's a natural thing.
Some parents would never let their children see them naked so are unlikely to have this issue as bathing together never happened -others have no issue with it and the kids probably at some point are the ones to ask their parents to cover up as they don't want to see them naked (usually at the first stirrings of puberty).

There's no particular age -just what is right for your family.

  • I have never shared a bath with anyone, including my son, it's a place of privacy and peace. He always knew it was out of bounds.

However, whatever is right for your family is OK.
