Dalaman is well known for it's checks and for charging for any overweight luggage. They have also recently been confiscating luggage scales at check in too. When we returned last month, we uTsed an empty check in desk to weigh our cases before we went to check our luggage in. Its easy to come home with more than you went with from Turkey !!

I weigh my cases in hotel then put the scales in my luggage so never had them confiscated. If we go away as a family I always check with airline if luggage limit is for party or for individual cases. I've nearly always been told it's for party but no one case can exceed X kg. It helps me work out whether I need to pay to upgrade luggage allowance as DD does not travel light! Trouble is if I do up grade I can't upgrade just one case it's always for the whole party. Swings and roundabouts.

Maybe they confiscate these as they class them as dangerous if in hand luggage - afterall you can't take a mental nail file or tweezers in hand luggage.

I don't know why, i am on 2 different Facebook groups which are Turkey related and loads of people have commented about the scales being prohibited. I'll try to find out. Maybe because they have batteries ?

It's not just Thomas Cook, it's all travellers on all flights.
Thanks. I'm really interested as it sounds so bizarre.
I doubt it can be because of the batteries as lots of other stuff you may carry in your hand luggage has batteries.

I have 2 types, the ones in your link that I bought from £1 shop and some digital ones that do not have a hook, they fasten with one of those click type fasteners.

And you can take tweezers in hand luggage (and nail files and knitting needles and sewing needles) - according to this link:

Last year I was made to bin my tweezers and metal nail file when I went through security and they were a bit off with me. Yet when my OH forgot he had a can of coke in his bag they laughed and said "how quick can you drink it"!

Thanks for the list though I will book mark as it's good to keep up to date with what is/isn't allowed.

  • Just to add to my O/P when we returned home a week later and on the hand luggage check the Turkish official confiscated my digital scales because he did not like the small S shaped very blunt hook on the end, his english was almost non existant which made communication very difficult. Personaly I think he liked the fact that they were a very neat set of digital scales and he wanted them for himself, why would I say this? because as I walked away he was sitting down and playing with them with a big smile on his face, sod him bloody thief. Yes I know my fault ect, ect, but beware all who read this and are going to use Dalaman airport beware thieves in uniform.

Why couldn't you just put them in suitcase if it was at checkin?
