More to the point, who takes a set of scales away with them on holiday so they can check the weight of the luggage for their return flight?
My wife does (as do a lot of Russian people).

Thomas Cook may have squeezed an extra £15 out of the passenger this time, but how many thousands have they lost in future bookings by the same traveller due to their pettiness?
I think you'd be right there. However, it could be more of the way that the check in staff at Dalaman are trained.

Dalaman is well known for it's checks and for charging for any overweight luggage. They have also recently been confiscating luggage scales at check in too. When we returned last month, we used an empty check in desk to weigh our cases before we went to check our luggage in. Its easy to come home with more than you went with from Turkey !!

    Really?

On what basis are they doing that?
I would argue that anything that I have in my hand luggage that is not prohibited (and AFAIK luggage scales are not on any prohibited list) is my business.
Would they confiscate neck pillows or a book? smiley-confused013.gif

If they insisted on confiscating my scales, I would be complaining to any Thomas Cook rep at the airport and would be writing a very strong letter to TC on my return home.
  • People, please think before posting. A child is involved. It could end in tears!

One of the issues with checked luggage limits it the inconsistency between airlines and/or airports. Sometimes you can get away with being a kilo or two over but it can also be enforced rigidly - I know the airport at Goa used to be notorious for excess luggage charges.

As someone who has always been pretty careful I don't really have much sympathy with those that do go over their limit, but it is a bugbear of mine that I can be charged a considerable sum of money for having luggage that is a kilo heavier than the next passenger's luggage, yet they could be 50 kilos heavier me but only had to pay the same amount for their flight.

The only fair way to do it is for everyone to pay proportionally for the weight of both them and their luggage combined. Bring it on!

Also, check to see if the scales are reading 0.0kg before you put the suitcase on the scales on the check in desk.

My Dad, who has traveled a lot for business and leisure has noticed in recent years that some foreign airports have a starting weight on them, take 0.5kg. So if your luggage allowance in the hold is 15kg, come to the airport with a suitcase weighing 14.7kg, your suitcase is overweight. Ask for the scales to be reset or say to deduct the starting weight from the displayed weight.

Its a display on the front or to the side of the desk (where you put your luggage)

I don't know why, i am on 2 different Facebook groups which are Turkey related and loads of people have commented about the scales being prohibited. I'll try to find out. Maybe because they have batteries ?

It's not just Thomas Cook, it's all travellers on all flights.

We had no such problems flying out of Dalaman last summer. No signs of attempts to seize scales.

And yes, we have a set of hand-held scales (with a strap that goes around the case handle) that we use to weigh cases.
