That's not the same as the distance tool, where you could put markers down and measure the distance between two parked cars to within a few cm.

I'm assuming so few people needed a feature like that it got axed.
  • It's now as good as useless on my desktop pc: ridiculously slow to load and laborious and cumbersome to use.

What was once a hugely useful tool for all kinds of purposes has IMHO ruled itself out of any consideration.

Bravo Google. Going down the Microsoft technogeek narcissism route in spades.
  • Works fine here.

It's still there, just ridiculously unintuitive to access. The old (several years ago) Google Maps interface was much better.

Streetview is still useful, but I tend to use the OpenCycleMap now:

Do you remember when everyone used streetmap.co.uk? It's still going!

  • I've given up on Google maps and gone back to Streetmap.

Switching some of the features in Google Earth off can make a big difference to performance IME, esp on a slow connection.

From the View Menu, turning-off the Tour Guide, Atmosphere and Water Surface options makes a palpable difference for very little change in functionality and are easy to switch back-on if you need them Then if you need more, you can disable or enable everything, individually or in groups via the Layers box in the Sidebar - and if you don't have the Sidebar, it can be switched-on in the View Menu too. :)
  • Friends moved onto a new estate which Google & Streetmap couldn't find. http://www.openstreetmap.org found it ok.
