I have just received the princely sum of £56 from Barclays for Sentinel compensation for the ten years prior to 2005. It states that the premiums paid during that period is £24. Unfortunately I have no way of checking this but approximately£2.40 per annum??? I don't think so! Any ideas anybody that knows about these things?

    UPDATE
If you don't think it's right, COMPLAIN.
When I phoned to complain they said I'd been sent the letter by mistake. A cheque for 350.00 duly arrived in the post.
  • I am not happy with the amount I have received. Do I now go to the Ombudsman?

If you have documentary proof that you paid more than the bank's records show, then you should submit it to them. However, if neither you nor the Bank have kept records going back twenty two years, then you really have very little alternative than to accept the amount offered.
If you believe the Bank may not have searched their archive fully then you can submit a Subject Access Request (SAR) to see exactly what they have on file , but as this will cost you £10 and your redress is only £24 then I would question the wisdom of this too.

Your offer letter will detail the procedure for referring your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).
However, as above, if the Bank no longer has records of the amounts you may or may not have paid then FOS cannot somehow force the Bank to find them. Expect a FOS referral to take many months with a positive result for you unlikely in the circumstances.

    Abster,

Assuming they have written to you about it, they know what products you had, so you do not need to know which cards you had or when. Just claim - see the advice on MSE in the first post where there are templates for completion. You just need to explain that you recall being told that it covered you for things that the law already covered.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
  • I received a cheque back from A1 for £432.56 (inc. interest) which covered all my payments that I had made since I started years ago. The only down side was that I had to cancel the policy but I was thinking of doing that anyway due to the yearly cost. Thanks again MSE as without your info I wouldn't have known about it.:T

I've had this on my Lloyds Bank account for over the last 15 years can I claim?
  • Call me a misguided heretic but I quite like the facility of being able to ring one number to get my cards replaced if my wallet is stolen.

If I reclaim (and I have the A1 paperwork) my policy gets cancelled. Is there a replacement product?
  • Am I entitled to claim if it was offered as part of a account package/perks? I did and still do have to pay for the bank account each month and this scheme has always been offered as part of it. I have had this account since before 2001.
  • I would like to send a letter to claim pre 2005 with Barclays, what would be the best address to contact them on?
