Hello
Can anyone advise, our son has seen a pediatrician and been told he likely has autism and has been referred for testing etc... She said she seen enough on first appointment to refer him straight away... I have been told I can claim dla for him?... He requires Care day and night, does anybody know if we will qualify? I have filled form in and sent off. Anyone have a child with autism? And have any advice? Many thanks.

Apply and see what happens. We were awared before his diagnosis but I know others who were rejected until long after they were diagnosed. It depends on the severity and the care needs which must be more than what another non disabled child of the same age needs.
Cerebra have an excellent booklet to help with the forms. http://w3.cerebra.org.uk/help-and-information/guides-for-parents/dla-guide/0 -

GP's often tell parents to claim DLA for Autistic spectrum disorder because without DLA services are pretty much closed to those who do not claim it.
so if anything and if you had a child or even adult who has autism, you would post such judgmental comment0 -
You've done the form already? Whilst you can get DLA without diagnosis, you may find that you are initially rejected due to lack of supporting evidence/documents - so if you are, don't feel disheartened. Wait until the diagnosis is confirmed, and then apply again with those letters etc.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

You don't have to have added expenditure. DWP don't ask for receipts.
You just have to have extra care needs
You may well find that as your aspie son goes through life, that not having dla will impact on help that he may have got, had he had that award.
As everything seems to hinge on a dla award.0 -
You have no idea of my situation or my son, benifets are there for a reason, so moorfull u for not claiming when entitled. Our extra money will go a long way for my son, so perhaps keep judgemental opinions like that to yourself.0

To claim DLA, your son must have more care and /or mobility needs (lower mobility if applying 5+ and higher if applying 3+) than a non disabled child his wn age. His needs (not diagnosis) must have lasted for at least 3 months and expect to last for another 6.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

You are aware that you can have a DLA award and not receive any payments? You simply need to let them know. Seems the right thing to do if you do not have additional costs?0 -
Believe it or not the DWP decide who gets benefits according to evidence produced ( medical etc ) and legislation - its NOT , ISNT and HAS NEVER BEEN about extra costs. The haters on this forum cant understand that.
OP - good luck. My son received highest rate for a different condition. It makes a real difference to quality of life - good luck xStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

We don't need to give him any extra care than any parent should. Minor adjustments are all that is needed for everyday life and he has no problems getting around he is 14. We have been under camhs and received the diagnosis and advice at no point was DLA mentioned. We also feel he does not need EXTRA MONEY and I don't need to be paid to look after OUR son. Like so many others do abusing the system in place intended for the truly needy.
And that is why we will not claim or have ever claimed DLA for him. If we did it would be fraud.0
