  • The barn shuts up from Dec 16 - Jan 9 for the holidays. :( Otherwise I would definitely fit in more riding over the break.

I've booked in an extra lesson on Wednesday (as we'll be flying back from London on Saturday), and already booked in for January, so at least that's sorted.

Also asked about loans and they're €320/mo for a full lease. Might consider that for later in the spring when I'm a bit more in the groove (and ideally less in need of someone to correct my position constantly!). I don't know if they do them over the summer when it's high season (barn also runs a B&B/equestrian holiday scheme), but at least with loans I can do a month as and when it suits.

Gone riding 4x now and it's still good. :) This weekend I've even felt pretty normal the whole time post-riding...bit fatigued last night, but that's not unusual even for days when I haven't ridden. Granted, yesterday's lesson was all walk/trot and trying to get pony to bend/accept contact properly (which he can do quite easily, it's me that's the problem!). I need to figure out other exercises to do between lessons to strengthen/add endurance.

Pony is also pretty much my dream horse...youngish (8-9yo), still dark grey (swoon), chunky (probably ISH) but moves quite well off the leg. We jumped last week and he was very nice there too...good scope but didn't get fired up just because we were jumping (though he did lose his mind a bit earlier in the lesson about some invisible gremlin outside the arena!). Just as well that I'm not in a physical or financial position to buy a horse at the moment!

horsey sounds lovely and always willing to encourage ill considered and unaffordable equine adventures as you know from own diary :)
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!
  • Thanks Watty, I know who to come to for enabling! ;)

(Dangerous bit of managing the finances: DH is pretty much on board with any decision I want to make as long as I can argue the logic for it...he's already said a loan would be fine, could probably argue in favour of livery instead. Perhaps as well as a car upgrade post-house sale we could also manage a pony purchase...:p Though logical brain says we should sort out our own lives/house/etc before adding another member to the family.)

  • Year-end recap for 2017:

I completely forgot about these goals, to be honest. :o

    Goals
    1. Personal: Move to Ireland! Success, and transition hasn't been too bad
    2. Personal: Lose the final 5kg No idea on this one, purposefully haven't been paying attention due to health issues
    3. Personal: Figure out health stuff Mostly success
    4. Financial: Mortgage balance: £95,000 Got below £105,000, not too bad given that we stopped focusing on the mortgage in the summer
    5. Financial: Lifetime ISA: £8,000 Never did this, but am re-focusing on pension contributions through work, which is equivalent
    6. Financial: Net worth: £300,000 Technically £288,924.36, but also €9,003.23, so not too far off
    7. Career: Sort out remote job Sorting it was successful, we'll see if 2018 brings another job hunt
    8. Career: Investigate new thing every week Pretty successful

Half-done, with primary focus on personal/career this year, for obvious reasons. We'll see what 2018 brings.

Mortgage-wise all the numbers got less exciting than previous years, but still good progress:

  • Thanks ATB, sometimes I don't think we've achieved that much, but when I think about how much our lives changed this year I think we've done quite well. :)

Happy new year to you too xx
  • Will try and remember these this time. ;)

    Personal
    • Figure out health/exercise routine that can be consistent ideally horse riding ;), but running would be good if it sticks - so far I’ve done 5 runs in the last couple of weeks, trying C25K again
    • Trip to the US to visit family
    • (Stretch) Replace our car Likely not until the end of the year, and also depends on house sale

    Financial
    • Mortgage balance: £95,000 This is just with regular payments, any OPs will be a bonus, and hopefully it will be irrelevant due to…
    • Sell the house! Ideally by August 2018, barring that by the end of the year
    • Save up for 2018-2019 rent Due August 2018
    • Ireland House Deposit: €5,000 Likely won’t start until 2018/19 rent is paid, and hopefully this will be hugely boosted by house sale

    Career
    • Ask for a raise This will be the first time I’ve done this, so wish me luck!

Will try to pick things towards annual goals each month, if only so I remember my annual goals. ;)

    Personal
    • Health/exercise: Horse riding 0/3
    • Health/exercise: C25K Week 5 in theory should get to week 6, but I'm not sure if my body will cooperate with increased activity every week
    • US Trip: Look into flights need to figure out a good time to travel

    Financial
    • Mortgage balance: £103,855 may require an OP of a few pence ;)
    • Sell the house: Draft letter to tenants (who asked for first right of refusal)
    • 2018 Rent: €6,350 currently have €5,200

    Career
    • Research current positions to figure out what sort of raise to request
