Is there any other airline besides monarch and ryanair that allow 10kg hand luggage i dont need hold luggage.
Flying out from birmingham to tenerife next april

Looking at the flights for monarch they are coming up a bit pricey i dont like ryanair as i had a problem 2 years ago, that has put me off them but there prices are great
Im sure monarchs will drop as it is early.

Your only other options are Thomas Cook and Thomsonfly, both of which only give you 5kg.

Is your dislike of Ryanair strong enough to stop you getting a good deal? It's really not that early for April flights, especially if you're going around the school holidays.
  • Fly regularly with Ryanair, possibly 10 times a year because they have the best prices and flight times to where I need to go. I also don't need hold luggage so being able to take 10kg is great. They have improved recently for me, in that you can now get a free allocated seat so that rush to sit together isn't as bad as it used to be but you can only book this 7 days ahead. Again it suits me and you can now download boarding pass to your phone. I have had issues with Monarch as well, we were stuck in Spain in the Ash cloud and they didn't help us at all. Overall I think unless you're going with somebody like BA they are all much of a muchness so you have to go with what's convenient for you.
    Hope this helps

Thank you to the above posters i travel on my own, with ryan air i lost a few days of my holiday when they had the air traffic strikes where as other airlines flew out the cheaper airlines did not, so i do try to avoid ryanair but i can manage hand luggage only and like i said they are the 2 with 10kg hand luggage allowance.

Thank you i may possibly book and try Ryanair again do you still have to print your return ticket off at your destination if it is over 7days or can you pay Before you fly for return ticket.

I presume by "ticket" you mean boarding pass. If you pay for a seat reservation in advance, you will be able to print off the return BP earlier, otherwise you'll have to do it within 7 days of the return flight. If you have a smartphone, you can also use the Ryanair app to get your BP, avoiding the need for printing (you'd need to access wifi or have a good mobile roaming data deal).

Also note that Ryanair now allows a second, smaller bag as hand luggage, in which you could put a couple of heavier smallish items, if needed:
One cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, plus 1 small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms may be carried per passenger.

What is the rationale for such a uselessly low hand baggage allowance of only 5kg? Plenty of passengers carry much more than this in excess body weight, yet they aren't surcharged or asked to go in the hold. The focus for hand baggage should be on size, not on weight. Easyjet has no weight limit and British Airways' limit is 23kg.

Just out of curiosity, do airlines ever weigh hand luggage, if you don't check in a suitcase?

I'm fairly sure that in Paphos (Cyprus) they don't have the facility!!

Ours weren't weighed when we flew (no other luggage) with Flybe.

I haven't flown with Thomas Cook or Thomsonfly, but one would assume the rationale is to generate ancillary revenue from checked bag charges. They are not competing with Ryanair/easyJet/BA quite so directly, so perhaps don't need to be so generous. There are so many variations on these size/weight allowances (eg Monarch, Jet2, Wizzair are slightly different again), that it's hard to identify a consistent rationale.

They do sometimes, but wouldn't always have such facilities at the gate, so I guess not everywhere. I've had mine weighed by Ryanair at the gate before, though not recently (probably 2 or 3 years ago the last time it happened).

In that case, they should set the limit at only 1kg then. Is there any objective justification for these low weight limits?
