    Hi Wiggynut,
DVDRW (not DVDWR) means DVD Read and Write. So you have a DVD writer already. If you're running WinXP it should detect your drive when you refit it and reboot so I'm not sure where you're slipping up.

DVD-RW means DVD Re-Writeable. Means it can record and re-record to Re-Writeable discs.

DVD-R means Recordable - Writes to non-erasable discs.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Not necessarily. I have a drive that has DVD RW written on it, but it only reads DVDs and writes to CD.

I'm thinking that it writes to CD only... just got confused as I thought RW meant that it was capable of writing to disc - my CD Writer has CDRW so thought perhaps that DVDRW meant it wrote to DVD !!!

The model number is IDE-DVD DVDRW8801/39

found this bit in driver properties (I did have to reload this as it got corrupted - I don't have a start-up/recovery disc so it took awhile to get that fixed).

Back to PC world then
Thanks for your help - just managed to confuse myself :o

    I'm confused again!??!? :D:rolleyes:
Why doesn't it recognise a blank DVD then? I'm definitely leaning towards it only being able to write to CD's not DVD's.

My D drive says CD ROM again!!! I'm sure it didn't say that before!

    Dunno.

But DVD-RW and DVD-R mean that what I posted.

Could it be this is an old Philips +RW Drive and only accepts +R or +RW media and you are trying -R or -RW media?

If it's just a DVD Player with a CD-RW Combi then it would just have the DVD-ROM Logo and the Compact Disc ReWritable logo on them.

Can you not take a photo of the front of the drive and post it up?

    Definitely a DVD Re-Writer.

Records to + and - format too.

I've added the two pics of the drive on my flickr site.

Does look the same as the one you're linked to Millionaire

My device manager now says PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8801 but drive 'D' in 'my computer' says Cd Drive - is that right.

I have a pack of DVD+RW - you can't drag and drop to burn a DVD?? I do at work but it's saying D is not accessible - Incorrect function.

    Have you rebooted the PC?
