Hi
I used to be fairly ok with computers but I've either had a brain melt or pc's don't make any sense anymore!!!
I thought my pc (refurbished from pc world) had a DVD player with a CD writer attached as one and my old CD Rom that I put in myself.
I want to back up my stuff burning DVD's so I brough a DVD writer... while taking out the spare CD rom drive I noticed that my DVD/CD burner said on the front DVDWR??? now does that mean it's suppose to be able to write DVD's?
when I plugged everything back in I managed to lose the driver and drive number in 'my computer' so it took me ages to get that back - it's now back as drive 'D' and says DVD/CD (at one point it just said CD ROM! ) - in the meantime (yep - it took that long to get the driver back) I took back the new DVD writer which I'm now regretting!
1) does DVDWR mean it can write DVD's or not?
1) shall I go back to PC world and re-buy the new DVD writer! (I feel like a fool!)
would appreciate an answer to question one please

Are you dyslexic? What is DVDWR? Anyway, it probably just plays DVD RW and writes to CD. What's the model number?0

DVDWR - printed on the front!
WR tends to stand for WRiter!
simple logic really!
CDWR - means CD Writer
DVDWR - means DVD writer
No... ? that's why I'm asking? I'm not in the industry... just wanted to check as I may have messed up my driver and got the wrong one now... maybe that's why it doesn't work - just thought I'd check with people who know about this sort of stuff!

Hi Wiggynut,
DVDRW (not DVDWR) means DVD Read and Write. So you have a DVD writer already. If you're running WinXP it should detect your drive when you refit it and reboot so I'm not sure where you're slipping up.0 -

Are you absolutely sure it says DVDWR and not DVDRW? The former I've never heard before in my life. The latter is what is commonly written on DVD writers."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Post the exact model number to be sure. Right-click My Computer - Manage - Device Manager. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives and post everything listed there, or look on the label on top of the drive.0 -

it didn't detect anything when I refitted it! the driver & drive letter disappeared! I've managed to get that back now but XP said it had got corrupted!
Superscraper & Chippy_Minton: It might have RW - I'm not at home now so I'll have to have a look later & post up the details.
When I brought this from PC world (refurbished) it listed certain specs but when I got the actual machine I found that some were different - ie number of USB's, graphics card specs etc... so I was wondering if they had got this different too - ie not just a DVD player but it can write too!
Just wanted to check first.
Thanks for your (helpful) responses!Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later datenow at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -

No, it's a question.
Goodness me, you can't ask a question without someone falling over themselves.0 -

Not necessarily. I have a drive that has DVD RW written on it, but it only reads DVDs and writes to CD.0
