Why can I taste soap in my food?

    That's an interesting thought.

We're encouraged to use different chopping boards for different foodstuffs, to avoid cross-contamination.

It might just be a marketing ploy. But it might mean that chopping boards harbour all sorts of residues - including soap.

I have considered this too, as I use plastic Joseph and Joseph ones for preparing food. However, that would mean that cutting raw chicken on the board (and potentially transferring soap taste), would then last throughout cooking/seasoning etc? That seems like a LOT of soap?

Fairy platinum are the best dishwasher tablets around so ignore the people trying to pin it on those. If anything it would be using cheap and nasty tablets that would cause the taste such as the low budget Aldi or poundland products. I recommend tesco own brand as recommended by the good house keeping institute.

My apologies, it is actually Finish tablets I have.
Just nosily reading this (I don't have a dishwasher!), but are you buying your Fairy tablets from one of the cheaper places? Just wondering if they are genuine Fairy tablets or counterfeit. It could happen.

If nothing else works, I would contact the marketing people at Unilever or P&G (can't remember who makes them), to see what they have to say.

Later: just looked at Amazon reviews (looking at the poorest):

As above, it's actually Finish tablets I have, and they are bought from Sainsbury's/Asda so hopefully not counterfeit! I will have a look at those Amazon reviews, thanks, and perhaps contact the manufacturers too, great idea!

I think I will try the wooden spoons/utensils, although not sure long term as I'm not a fan of these :o and would wood not hold a soap taste/smell just as much as any other material?

It's the silicon that you are tasting, not what the utensils are being washed in.

I find disc he's come out of the dishwasher feeling soapy if a whole tablet is used. I break one in half now and just lob it in. Dishes come out just as clean

Wooden utensils do hold tastes and smell. I have a spoon for curry, one for tomato based dishes one for gravy and one for white sauces, cake making etc. Obviously they can't go in the dishwasher either , neither can my wooden boards.

Just to rule it out, you aren't keeping any food near something strongly scented that might be contaminating it?

Do you eat a lot of pine nuts?

I was convinced I had some deadly disease as all of a sudden everything I ate tasted soapy or like hairspray it went on for weeks.

I used "the google" and found that pine nuts can cause this, and I had been eating a small handful each night while cooking! I stopped the pine nuts and my taste buds went back to normal.

I recently had some friends have this issue. The silicon spoons they were using to feed their baby tasted strongly of soap. It turned out to be a brand of dishwasher tablet, a main brand and possibly a scented version but I can't remember. They said they has to throw the spoons away as hand - washing them didn't get rid of the taste.

Nope, I can taste the soap even from chicken that has been in the freezer or fridge and taken straight out of the packaging.

I reckon I'll need to start eliminating items too such as my silicone utensils. Thing is, they were expensive so I'm tempted to contact the shop!

Do your silicon items taste of soap if you lick/suck them? If not then I doubt they're the problem and I wouldn't chuck them.

Are you using one of those dishwasher fresheners that hang off the inside? My MIL has one in her dishwasher and we found that it made all DD's plastic cups/plates etc taste really strongly of soap/lemon fragrance/rinse aid. Very unpleasant, we handwash all her stuff at MIL's now.

  • I had this, but rang Yorkshire Water. They said that sometimes water 'blows back' into the supply from dishwashers/washing machines and makes all water etc taste wrong. Putting a valve in to the connection for the washing machine and getting rid of the dishwasher (that was failing anyway) sorted it out. If we had been keeping the dishwasher then we would have put the valve in to the dishwasher connection as well.
