The Great Hunt: Ryanair tips and tricks

  • It is usually cheaper to purchase drinks and snacks on-board in euros rather than sterling .You are also allowed to consume food and drink (except hot drinks) purchased at the airport during the flight.
  • Really don't like their checking in/printing boarding pass policy - 10 day holiday means I have to pay for an allocated return seat or I can't check in before I go as return flight has to be checked in after I have taken outbound flight & trip was booked through an agent that could not get round this - are they breaking any rules doing this?

Hi Margaret - you could always go to an internet cafe and log on to your account and print off your return boarding pass - I've done that before. Paid one euro for half an hour's internet and about 10c for the printing - cheaper than paying extra for an allocated seat,
  • They'll sell it to you! and you'll then have it confiscated at customs(if stopped!) as a single traveller I have asked the question as they often sell offers of two bottles for a better price than one!

Is there any limit on how much duty-free you can bring in the shopping bag? Obviously duty-free on non-EU flights (of which Ryanair has very few) are subject to statutory limits, but does Ryanair impose any limit on duty-free purchases on EU flights? For example, could you bring 5 x 1L bottles of spirits?

Well, if your flight is within the EU, you should be charged duty-paid prices for any alcohol you buy, so there should not be a limit on anything for personal use as long as it fits in the bag. The shopping bag rule does not only apply to dutiable items, it usually means any standard sized airport shopping bag, people just use the DF term generically.

This would only apply to a flight to/from a non-EU destination. Within the EU, you would have to pay the tax and duty on any alcohol and could therefore bring as much as you want as long as it could reasonably be considered for personal use.
  • Margaret, just so you know, you do still need to check in via the app, not just show them your booking number. Once you check in using the app, it generates a boarding pass for you on your phone which you show to Ryanair staff as you would with a paper version.

Even on a 7 day trip they catch you out on printing your return ticket because of their 7 day and 2 hour rule.
    Flight departs Tuesday 7-20am
    Return departure is Tuesday 11-45am

As someone says either find an internet cafe, come back a day early or cough up for a seat on return journey.

I`ll need to look into this app check in thing.

I don't know what the 7 day, 2 hour rule is but in the example above you will be able to print the inbound boarding pass from midnight on your departure date.

After midnight I will already be where i`m going to and would then have to waste time searching for somewhere to get on the internet to check in and print my return pass.
    Not ideal.
This is just another obstacle to get you to buy an allocated seat.
  • If you think Ryanair are bad only allowing check in a week b4 if you don't buy a seat, Ive booked BCN to EDI with Vueling. Can only check in 3 days B4 to print boarding cards unless you buy a seat.

The app is excellent really easy to use and worked for me on a number of flights.

Never yet paid for any extras and have bought a light weight bag managed two weeks away with hand luggage
