Sleep talking

Hi all,

I've always been a bit of a mumbler in my sleep but I am getting so much worse. I'm full blown talking, sitting bolt up right sometimes, shaking my partner etc it's getting a bit much and I feel sorry for him. It's not always a negative talk either it can be as bizarre as ' I need a spoon'. Can anyone shed some light on this? X

  • I'd suggest going to a sleep specialist, see what they say.

Are you really stressed at the moment? Things like stress, I believe, can have an affect on things like that.

I think it's quite normal to say rather random, strange things. It's probably your brain working through things from the day and you're just voicing some of it, but things get mixed up so it doesn't all make sense.

I've been a talker and walker all my life

It gets worse when I'm drinking or highly stressed

Worse thing I ever done was when I lived alone in a flat in a converted house. I went walking, right out the flat, up the stairs and onto the flat roof

Luckily that where I woke up. Unluckily I had locked myself out of my flat and had no option but to run down the high street in a t shirt at 3am to find a phone box to summon help

Gave the fire brigade a good laugh at least
  • No I'm not stressed I don't think lol I'm currently on annual leave at work return Monday but I'm not worried about it. The waking my partner up and shaking him was having a dream that we was in a cave and couldn't get out, which Im guessing is from the don't tell the bride tv show I'd watched earlier in the evening where he chose to get married in a cave lol.

Is it possible that you are worrying/stressing about something and just don't realise? Or maybe you're worrying about this each night?

Maybe try having a relaxing bath or lighting a lavendar candle or something else relaxing before going to bed and just see if it does help. Easy thing to do and it could help. If not it's possibly something else.

    lol that would make sense.

oh gods, my DH does this sort of stuff all the time; I've had some spectacular bruises on my arms and legs, where he flails about in his sleep, too; and some of the rubbish he utters when he's asleep has to be heard to be believed!
Wish I knew how to stop him doing it; decamping to the "spare bed" ain't an option, because we don't have one!
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

A woman who lives just up the road from me went sleepwalking last March. She had never done it before, so the first she knew about it was when she woke up at the bottom of the stairs with a broken neck and a broken back. She sleeps downstairs now....

I have a tendency to have the same issue. I once shook my husband awake, demanded the name and address of his doctor (twice!) and don't remember any of it! My girls did it as well, my middle one once went downstairs, had a conversation, ate a sausage roll and doesn't remember any of it. I used to sleep walk as a child but grew out of it when I got older, as has the girls.

However, the strange midnight requests for medical information and other incidents (there's been so many) got worse around the menopause. I used to get very hot and had very vivid dreams (still do) so perhaps you're getting too hot at night? Could that be worth checking out?

I got quite worried about the strange things I do and say in the night that I removed any sharp things from the bedside table, like nail scissors etc. Hubby is still alive though!
  • It does get worse when I'm hot so perhaps that's just it, no where near the menopause stage (I hope!) separate rooms is not an option we would hate that x
