Does BIL own the house or does he rent it from someone/council/HA?0
-
A few months ago my mum came up with a daft scheme to give all her savings away. The more I told her it was a bad idea, the more she dug in her heels and insisted she would go ahead.
Eventually I decided that I couldn't do anything to actually stop her and backed off. Surprise surprise, once I had backed off and let her make up her own mind she decided it was a bad idea!
Here's hoping that your mother also makes a good decision on her own.0 -
Is he doing her a favour
In a word, no.0 -

He owns it, not sure if he has a mortgage on it though.0 -
I'd be very concerned also about heating costs. Are they likely to increase?“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0

I would think so, its a 4 bed house, she is in a 2 bed bungalow at the moment.0 -

Is she 'of sound mind'.......?0

No such thing as "bedroom tax" and what you might be referring to as the under occupancy charge is only for social housing tenants and does not apply to a private rental.
Actually the room rate has applied in private rentals since 2007, the changes to housing benefit for social housing tenants (that labour christened the 'bedroom tax') was the alignment of these room rates to the social sector.
But yes, she would be nuts to give up an assured tenancy.0 -

Then her heating costs will probably increase dramatically.
I downsized from a house to a flat and my combined gas/elec went down by over £60 a month.
I can't see any advantages for her in the proposed situation. Giving up a secure tenancy, living in a larger house that's more costly to run, sharing it with someone else's stored furniture and having to negotiate with family for repairs, it's a lot to take on at 70.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0
