DD (13) loves the program and especially when we watch it together. Last night we tried the microwave risotto that was in episode 2. (facebook page had a photo with the amounts for the recipe). Have to say that we had to up the liquid (by about 1/4 pint) as it wasn't cooked when we checked after 10 minutes, we also added home grown basil to ours flavour was really good.

All 4 of the big Supermarkets sell the Smoked Salmon Trimmings. I'm pretty sure Aldi & Lidl do not sell them (but their Smoked Salmon packs are not that much more).

Sainsbury's have them for £1.79 for 120g, Asda, Tesco & Morrisons all at £1.48/1.49.

Of course its contrived, if they bought all that where would it all go after say 2 weeks, even allowing that they throw away perishable stuff.

I've seen every episode (for my sins). It's fairly obvious from what is said and done that they are not "shopping normally" in that segment of the programme. How abnormal it is remains open to speculation.
Whatever you say, it is compulsive viewing! We all know the format but still love to gawp at just how reckless others are with their cash and health.

This is my issue with the programme: that the real learning points (essentially canny cooking and trying different shops/brands with economy in mind) are lost in the name of having an entertaining format and the inevitable questions it raises.
My issue with the show is that it's missing a huge opportunity to re-educate - drinking water instead of that ridiculous sugary concoction, for example. The answer to excessive cake consumption in episode 2 was.....stick some beetroot in it. Why not just stop eating it full stop and replace it with a healthy treat?
Well I have to say that this provramme has helped me in as much as it had made me re-examine my spending habits.
Me too....when I heard the £330pw / £17k pa figures bandied about I calculated my own spend on supermarket food. It's around (probably less than) £1,000 pa.
It looks like I'm going to do much better this month with my budget.
    Beat mine :p

Personally, I think C4 does a better job of this. It's far from easy, because the advice is shifting all the time. But I think Food Unwrapped does the nutritional science better. Jamie's Super Foods does better, more elegant recipes, and has the excellent approach of aiming for 3 dishes to comprise an ideal day's diet - both in nutritional balance, and overall calories (to my favoured 400-500-600 model, it would seem).

I don't think they are in the same league really. It depends on what you call 'eating well' I think. The BBC programme is still about packaged and processed to a degree. The C4 programmes are about health foods, myths and facts through and through. I agree with you though I would choose watching C4 programmes mentioned above than the 'entertaining' programme this thread is about.

C4 are my channel of choice with programming of this ilk and although I watch the Eat Well For Less programme and think it has some decent points etc I think it's dumbed down compared to what the programme could actually achieve.
  • VfM4 - I would dearly love to beat your £1k budget:rotfl:

However, with a 6ft3inch son who does A physical job and appears to have hollow legs that is just pipe dream.

Still I have to admit to feeling pleased that I am doing much better this month. There's still room for improvement but considering we have been up to our ears in diy and decorating and my kitchen hs been in chaos I think I have done well. I have shaved off at Least a Third.

I have been watching Jamie on c4 too, really enjoying it. He hs lost weight and looks better for it, so he's doing something right. I like all the tips about vitamins and nutrients etc - very informative.

I am also delighted that I have lost 8lbs this month, so a double bonus......:D
  • I enjoy the programme and think it kick starts the families on a better road. Small steps.
The one shop may be contrived but they do have the families actual till receipts over some many weeks and divide them to get there average shop. I think the problem for many is they shop on lots of separate occasions over a week and never add up the total.

Advice from the DFW board is to keep a small notebook & pen and record everything you spend from your purse that's not included in debit card/credit card bills - that includes the odd bottle of milk, bread (and other stuff like coffee & cake, greetings cards etc) so you really do know how much you're spending. You can pick the other food expenses from your bank account or credit card bill so it's possible (if you want to) to know your total food spend. Or of course you can always save your receipts and record cash spends from that.
  • I would love them to come and see if they can trim anything off my food shop, it varies between £100 - £130 a month for 2 of us!! I would be willing to bet they couldn't. I shop around, Aldi, Lidl, their baked beans are fabulous, the tin is full of beans, no 2" of sloppy sauce at the top. Morrison and occasionally Tesco. If I shop at Aldi, I have to travel about 20 miles round trip, they are hoping to build one in the town, planning permission is in, if they get it, I will reduce my shopping miles by more than half.

I menu plan and also shop with a list, although if OH is with me I do not always stick to the list, but try to as far as possible. I keep a record of till receipts in my diary.......
