My daughter has hinted for some Ugg type boots for Christmas. She knows she won't be getting the real deal but on the other hand I don't want to just spend a fiver.

I've looked at two types and wondered if anyone can give an opinion which one is the best. And would suede or sheepskin be better.

The first is Just Sheepskin. As the name suggests - they are made of sheepskin with a wool lining.

the second is Gumbies Ewe Boots which are made of suede with a sheep's wool lining. Has anyone heard of Gumbies Ewe boots.

Really be grateful for some help because I just want to get on and finish my Christmas shopping!!!! Thanks:confused:

I havent heard of the ones you have mentioned but my neice wants EMU boots and I think they must be cheaper than UGGS, dont quote me on that though cause I have got a pair of the cheap old Pr*mark ones and have never worn them cause the make me look like I have got hippo feet :rotfl:
  • Well - I won't go into what I think they look like - and I've got size 8 1/2 canoes!!!! :D
The gumbies http://www.snugglebug-direct.com/shop/gumbies.html are around the £50 mark - the Just sheepskin ones are dearer. I suppose I really want someone to say they've got a pair of Gumbies, how fab they are and they'd never be without them - go on - make my day.

Any views on suede or sheepskin?
  • Sorry i'm being silly, but what products (names of them not the brands) did you buy? is a suede brush ok to use on the outerface? and what kind of thing is the rubber??
I might just ask for the set for Christmas as people dont know what to buy me x

Hi, I've dug out the bag in which I keep all my bits and bobs for shoes and can tell you the brush is literall called 'suede and nubck brush' - notwithstanding the fact that your boots and mine are sheepskin, this brush will be fine for them, it has one side with nylon and soft wire bristles, one with rubber short 'bristles' (don't know what else to call them!) and along the edge s shaped rubber edge to get into seams and welts - I don't suppose anyone will object to me telling you the brand as I'm certainly not advertising, but just trying to help out - the one I have is by the famous shoe polish brand, Kiwi. I also have a suede and leather protectant (I use Woly from an independent shoe shop/cobbler, but have read somewhere that Clarks do a good one, as do Punch, all very common makes on the high street), also have a suede and nubuck renovator in black - again was assured this is fine for sheepskin, it's a black spray which is good for when little patches seem to go slightly grey on black sheepskin (I think if they have rubbed against trousers or if they've been used for driving this may be useful), I have two other things - one is a sort of sponge (it says on the box sponge for suede) again by Woly, again ok for sheepskin, it says it's for 'dusting and cleaning' or removing greasy spots - also have something that looks like a normal eraser you'd use in an office, but harder, and it just says 'shoe care' on it - again for spot stains - i think if you use one you'd then need to use the renovator to restore to full 'blackness'. The place I've seen with the best selection of this type of prooduct, where you should also be able to get advice, is a good old fashioned cobbler - failing that, Heel Bars such as Timpsons also carry good stock and should be able to advise you , the most expensive of the products I think was the renovator at 4.99.
That ahving been said, if you would be happier with the Ugg set, there's no reason not to buy it, I spent the money I saved on ordering a spare of insoles (not from Ugg Australia but another company in NZ) as I love it when they are thick and fluffy!

Hi, I don't know about Gumbies, but Just Sheepskin are a reputable make sold in Faith, Office (I believe), Harrods and other large department stores as well as online directly. I don't have any of their boots but my sister does and really loves them (in fairness, she doesn't have any others to compare them with), I have a pair of their pink wooly slippers and they are divinely soft but very slippery soles! They are relatively inexpensive for sheepskin, but if I were you, rather than buy direct I would look to see if any of their stockists have discount vouchers - Faith had a recent 20% off promotion, not sure if it's still on. I personally feel there is no comparison between sheepskin and suede/wool and would always go for sheepskin - the online company NZ Nature have a 20% discount on all their sheepskin boots at present too.

goshhh... i want them for under a 100 pounds and in grey cardy style -cloggs dont do grey which is the only site on that link which lists them for under100 pounds

I guess you may have to accept that you just can't afford them - Uggs certainly aren't cheap, but like everything else, we all have to buy within our means. Posters on this forum do try really hard to help eachother, but can only advise on what's available - if there are no sites listed selling the boots you want at the price you want to pay, then you'll have to decide if the product or the price is more important and either buy a different colour/style/brand or save your pennies!

Toffe'n'tom, has your daughter by any chance inherited your size 8.5 feet?

They have some of those sizes for the genuine Ugg boots on M and M Direct, size 8.5, 9 and 9.5 at much reduced prices, usually about £69 or £79, because the big sizes are less in demand.

My own daughter's in her 20's now but takes a size 8, and has done since her early teens...and yes, I did give thanks to the good Lord when her feet stopped growing!!!

I just missed out on the size 8's from M and M Direct but they had loads of the bigger again sizes. Might be worth a look if anyone needs them that big, you could get genuine Uggs for less than the price of a cheaper alternative.

Or Shudoo have their 20% off code still valid till 30 November.
  • Thanks everyone

really appreciate the comment about the suede v sheepskin. In answer to the question, yes, regrettably, i think she may have inherited my flippers - she's 11 and a size 7 and a half. and I have checked and keep checking the m and m website. when i first checked they did have eights but no longer - I could kick myself (but not wearing a pair of uuuuuuuuuuggggggs)

What a good idea Chameleon! I would never have thought of looking there for that. You know you are getting quality products from Lakeland. After all it is to use on our precious Uggs.
I have been out all day & have missed popping here to see what's going on.
I'll catch up with all the posts tonight.
