I would also point to this:
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2014-Auto-Bild-50-Summer-Tyre-Shootout.htm
Which shows a significant narrowing in quality between the best and worst -- 61:46 in the wet, vs 72:44 (and if one takes away the outliers, as is commonplace with statistical data, we get 56:47, still a gap but nowhere near the one you selected).0 -
Tripe. Your post was self-evidently seeking to portray budget tyres in the worst possible light.
No, it was pointing out that there was empirical evidence that there really are significant differences between tyres. The very fact that you chose to go back to 2012 for your data says it all.
<shrug> First reputable comparison test a quick google came up with.0 -

... between the best and worst -- in direct response to someone asking about a specific brand, without even attempting to work out where that brand might be in the scheme of things.
Just the usual lazy "ditchfinder = bad" nonsense, and as such meaningless.<shrug> First reputable comparison test a quick google came up with.
As I said. Lazy.0 -
Oh, OK. So I'll ignore your irrelevant descriptions of identical products being sold under different brands for different prices, then.
But it's not irrelevant. It gives an idea of just how much mark-up a "brand name" carries in and of itself. Which suggests that, at source, those expensive quality tyres are likely just as cheap as the ling-longs.
Which, I believe, was LT's point that (to use your own words) you miss so badly.0 -
... between the best and worst --
Yes, I did explicitly say it was between best and worst. Well spotted...in direct response to someone asking about a specific brand
...but, unfortunately, that's where your observation skills ran out, since it was in reply - albeit without quoting, my apologies - to Joe's post immediately above it.Joe_Horner wrote: »Bear in mind that a lot of tyre reviews online are written by people with the "it's Chinese, a ditchfinder, it's crap" attitude and they'll score them badly no matter how well they actually perform.
Honestly I don't think you'll find a really bad tyre out there nowadays - by which I mean one that a normal driver, staying well away from the limits, on public roads, is ever going to find a problem with apart from maybe wear rates and noise.
Certainly, all the supposed ditchfinders I've tried over the past several years have had more than enough grip (wet and dry) for anything approaching sensible driving.
Ooh, look. You wanted generalisations debunking? There's one. Which the link debunked. No more, no less than that.0 -
Oh dear -
Move along - nothing more to see here.
Let's change subject.
What a lot of weather we've been getting lately.0 -
What would be empirical evidence is the OP, who has known the car with decent tyres and when they have worn down, how the car now operates with these cheapos. They might even be good n cheap.0

Now, no-one's suggesting that all tyres are the same, but the difference is far less than most of the (generally limited and unrepresentative) test figures suggest. Any real world difference is really not important for drivers who place the responsibility for avoiding accidents on themselves rather than on the technology around them.
Have a look at some ACTUAL reviews of tyres, that compare a spread including the best in class and the worst in class. The difference is quite shocking.
And the point remains - a £40 tyre with £30 transportation from the far east and profit margins added in is a £10 tyre. A £60 tyre with the same transportation and margin costs is a £30 tyre.0
