When I first listed on Ebay I had no feedback as did every other new Ebayer. I hadn't heard of Paypal and now that I have I wish I hadn't as their fees are a rip off. I doubt if the seller could be bothered to take an actual photo of their item it would look that much different to the ones found here:-

Oh so trusting! Just send a cheque and hope for a miracle then.
  • Long before the days of Ebay I used to buy/sell stuff through a magazine called Micromart. It was a classified ad listing format. No pictures, no feedback and certainly no Paypal. Cheques were the de facto method of sending payment.

If the OP is concerned about sending a cheque why not send it recorded delivery and request the seller sends the item recorded delivery and ask for a tracking number. That will give proof of receipt of the cheque and proof as to whether or not the item has been posted putting the onus for proving delivery onto the seller. If the item doesn't materialise start a claim through the small claims court.

I wouldn't necessarily bother with tracking, confirmation, etc. for a cheque - it may give you peace of mind that it's been received, but it won't count for anything in the event of a problem.

Tracking or no tracking, you're at the mercy of the seller. Who is probably a very nice person and nothing to worry about :)

They are fakes, they are imported from China, the latest pics he uses matches similar auctions from beginning of year.

You can buy these sets from a supplier in Hong Kong, for example James Bond Full Box Set, $65.

  • You can do a search of the seller's completed listings, which I've done for you. His first sale was on 16 august http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WWE-ROYAL-RUMBLE-BOXSET_W0QQitemZ120151124297QQihZ002QQcategoryZ41588QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

why don't you contact the buyer and ask how it all went (feedback hasn't yet been posted).

by the way, is the seller's name actually brian? as in briansdvdmania

    other options:

offer cash to pick up the item directly
ask for a photo of the actual item before making payment (e.g. taken in front of the address seller has given you to post the cheque to).
    google the seller's real name.

i see these are new items. If they are much cheaper than anywhere else then it obviously it's either fakes, scam, counterfeit etc. (i.e. how could he be making a profit).

    good luck
  • Hey all,

I emailed the seller on Sunday (through ebay of course) and asked if he would be willing to set up a paypal account, i explained that it was quick and easy to do, plus he would attract alot more interest if people could see that he accepted paypal.

Recieved an email from him today 'have not recieved payment yet'

What shall i do now???? I dont wish to part with £75 and he STILL hasnt had any feedback left from anyone.............

Why not pay for the item you bid on?
    The money, Dave...
  • Sounds too risky to me, I use Ebay a lot and would never buy anything from a new seller with no Paypal. If you don't pay you may get one strike against you but this is nothing to worry about. One strike against you is better than losing your money.

    Hi

Personally, I only accept Paypal on ebay as it's instant - I got really hacked off with complaints about late delivery when I'd sent it as soon as payment cleared just because the cheque wasn't sent for days....

However - there are an awful lot of sellers who refuse to use Paypal due to their obscene fees and the issues with dodgy buyers. I have no idea whether the item you looked at is genuine or not, but just because they have no feedback doesn't mean they're dodgy. Have you considered that they may have been buying under a different name and decided to keep the selling side separate?

Stock photos are no indication either really, I use them for new stock as they're generally better than I would take, and for dvd's etc as it's not worth the time to take them myself. And I'm very honest:D

Yes, they may be a complete con job, but on the other hand they may be legit and you're refusing to pay them. Don't withhold payment or generally muck them about - you bid and you should either pay or ask to cancel the transaction with them. It won't really help you to wait for them to get feedback, as you'll still be worried about it even if they get a couple of positives, and to be honest if they are crooked they can do a few false bids and put their own f/b on.

Also, (and anyone who knows better feel free to shoot me down:)), if you claim through Paypal, doesn't the seller have to have the money in their account to pay you? If they're dodgy they just won't so you'll lose it anyway. It's happened twice to me, but admitidly (spelling??) both times were for under £15 so it may be different for larger amounts.

At the end of the day, you're not likely now to feel comfortable going ahead with the sale even if they do set up an account because you've had that doubt sown.

    Anyway, that's my two-penneth!

I agree, this looks very suspect to me. As has been suggested try and get in contact with the winning bidder of the other item, it's interesting that he hasn't left any feedback as of yet, either from the seller or buyer.

Maybe send him an e-mail saying you'll come round and pick it up for cash, and see how he reacts, if it's dodgey, he's going to be reluctant to give you his address.

    Good luck!
