Preparing for Winter

I have just put my electric blanket on the bed. I got it in a catalogue sale at the end of that horrifically cold winter for £24.99 reduced from seventy-odd. Hopefully it will do the job. OH is back on nights, my bed is very cold when I am alone. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

I have these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000F5FNXE/ref=oss_product and love them, I keep thinking the sun is shining when I walk past the bathroom, even at night
. That's a good offer atm and they're non flicker so much better for migraine sufferers.
I've just ordered one, I have the darkest living room in the world, I have a front room which is lovely and sunny and then you go through to the living room (with tv and sofa) and it's horrible and dark, hopefully this bulb will change all that! I keep it as the living room cos it's relatively big compared to the front room and my dogs bark when people walk past, in winter it's really cosy apart from being dark.............................so thankyouKEEP CALM AND keep taking the tablets :cool2:0 -

I like the plush ones rather than those really thin blanket types.
I am planning to save a fortune on heating (my gas boiler is around 25 years old) by adorning the sofas with lots of throws and cushions.
Thanking your good selves.

Where are you located? I bought a really lovely one from Westgate (our local Coop)Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -
Yesterday I went to Asda and bought a couple of pairs of leggings in their half-price sale. I will wear these under my trousers when it's really cold.
I am sitting here in my slanket and starting to feel too warmI found cheapie ones on 'Grabitnow' and bought one for each member of my family. My mum phoned a couple of nights ago to say she was using hers and how lovely and warm it was, but she was worried that she was having to use it already.
I have already used my hottie one night this week and put an extra quilt on the bed. And I have been closing the henhouse door for my girls the last couple of nights - this morning I could see my breath when I went out to see to them  I can't believe it's still only August. I have never experienced an August this wet and cold (although yesterday and today have been sunny and warm-ish).
I do think we're in for another cold winter. I have arranged with my housing association for an inspector to come and look at the bathroom window - for some reason all the stuff that holds it onto the house (very technical explanation there :rotfl:) seems to be crumbling away and it's very draughty. They are also going to do a damp-proof course and fix the flashings around the chimney stack before winter sets in.Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Oh - and does anyone have an explanation for this? Yesterday morning when I got back from walking the dogs, my heating was on! The controls haven't been touched since I turned it off in the spring, thermostat hasn't been touched .... cue spooky music.
Come to think of it - microwave was switched on and flashing the other morning when I came downstairs, and my foster son swears it wasn't him, and it certainly wasn't me .... perhaps I have a ghost!
Well, at least I know the heating works, so I don't have to test it now ....Aspire not to have more but to be more.

Thanks so much for the tip regarding Asda fleeces - I bought 4 for £6 today which is such a result: DD's horse has two rugs - things you put on horses at night when it's cold - and they are proper fitted things, weatherproof dadidadida. We have a lightweight and a heavyweight and could really do with a medium weight one but they are HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY (as is everything to do with horses). So I've bought the fleeces because we can put them UNDER the proper rug - the rug will hold them on and it'll make it a bit thicker. Huh? Huh?!!!;) At the moment we are just starting to put the lightweight one on her at night (forecasting 7 degrees tonight, which is cold for here after such a hot day), but I don't think it'll be long before she needs something a bit heavier. And you can chuck fleeces in the washing machine, which is more than can be said for the old Weatherbeetas (which have to be cleaned and reproofed at - wait for it - £20 per rug per time ).
PLUS while I was in Asda they had those buckets with moulded handles - £5 if you buy them from the tack shop for feeding your horse, only £2 in Asda and as Horsey's feed bucket has just given up the ghost, this was a brilliant find!
On a more human note, bought slippers for DH and DS, which were a really good price, but I notice they're selling out fast.
We don't have any ghostly heating or microwave here smileyt - you don't think one of your circuits is on a timer. do you? :rotfl:0 -
Hi I've been enjoying your tips for preparing for winter and hope that you don't mind me joining in? Following recommendations on here I went to Ikea yesterday looking for their cheap throws. I thought that you might be interested to know that their Irma throws are down to 99p. I think that they are normally £1.69 they had loads of them piled up (near the lifts) at Gateshead so plenty for everyone hopefully!:jThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

I had my bed socks on last night (DH is not yet ready to change the summer duvet for the heavier one) - I was glad I'd gotten them in the M&S sale at the end of last winter - COSY!
DD wanted a blanket with 2 duvets last night! It wasn't THAT cold! But she has been sleeping on top of the little duvet (IKEA) that originally fitted her toddler bed, and even though we got her a full sized duvet last winter, she kept the old one and we used it on top last winter, and the past few weeks she had it out again as it was "so comfy" underneath her. Last night, she was playing silly bu**ers, so she needed the 2 on top and a blanket, so I just gave her the tiny baby blanket I'd knitted her.

I just ordered 10 bags of coal and it was £4 cheaper than last year! That will keep the burner in overnight at least for 3 months. It's definitely turning now.0
