Knit happens, that's poo! We've been there recently. Sorry I don't know of anyone in your area. Make sure you get someone trustworthy to sort it. Ours turned out to be a problem with gas supply in the end. Had national grid out as it was actually pretty dangerous  and they sorted it for free.
    Hope it gets fixed soon.

my boiler is on the blink, i have no hot water, and no heating - poo, good job i checked now. lots of gurling water sounds and like it is trying to start but cant. have rang my usual plumber/heating guy.

anyone in the Manchester area know of a boiler man they can recommend

I don't know anyone in your area but it might be worth contacting your local Age Uk/Age Concern as they may have a list of contractors recommended by people as reliable and not rip-off merchants.

Also for thermal socks head to an outdoors type shop, especially if you have an outlet mall/village nearby. Yes, they are more expensive than other places but they will last for years so it's a one-off expense - no worrying this time next year. I wear mine throughout the year for hiking as well as just for cold foot purposes and 3 years down the line they're still in great condition.
  • Has anyone seen any nice throws?
I like the plush ones rather than those really thin blanket types.
I am planning to save a fortune on heating (my gas boiler is around 25 years old) by adorning the sofas with lots of throws and cushions.

    Thanking your good selves.

I don't have a 'car box' as such but I do keep lots of useful items in my car: a wind up torch; a picnic blanket; a spare pair of 'driving shoes'; a pair of floristry scissors (for berried holly etc); shopping bags (not plastic but reusable); a pair of sunglasses; a spare pair of reading glasses (I only wear glasses for reading and not for driving the car so sometimes I can arrive at work having forgotten my glasses; a sick box or can double up as a 'pee' box if my grandsons are desperate; baby wipes; kitchen roll; car info ie roadside recovery, insurance, maintenance history; bag for rubbish; an umbrella; an ice scraper; ice defroster spray; a token (£1 coin replacement) for supermarket trolleys; a large plastic box for shopping and a Britain road atlas. I have just surprised myself in listing all of the above. I think that I might be more organised than I thought I was.

I also carry in my regular handbag: a torch; a whistle (in case I had a car accident and went off the road, I could blow my whistle for help); pop socks (in case I am wearing socks and want to try on a pair of shoes that are worn with stockings/tights; a calculator; an umbrella; cold sore ointment; a toothpick (I'm getting old and food sticks - I can't live without one though I am discreet when using); reusable shopping bags and a spare pay as you go mobile phone.

In winter I add extras: empty flattened cardboard boxes earlier this year in case I got stuck in the snow to give me some leveredge; gloves and an extra fleece. I would add a shovel if necessary but weather hasn't been so bad when driving to warrant that YET!

Can anyone recomend a good "Daylight" energy saver bulb. I too felt the effects of gloom and doom with the heavy clouds and rain the other day.

I have these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000F5FNXE/ref=oss_product and love them, I keep thinking the sun is shining when I walk past the bathroom, even at night :o. That's a good offer atm and they're non flicker so much better for migraine sufferers.

yayy it is all fixed, My usual plumber heating guy was on hols, delayed in Ibiza so he text me the number of his friend, who works for worcester, which my boiler is, he unblocked it, and had it working in 15 mins, I thought it was something serious, but apparently one of the tubes inside was a little blocked, he checked it with a little electronic gadget (can you tell how technical minded I am) and said for it being five years old and never being serviced (:embarasse)it was only a few points off where it should have been, and the best news i now have piping hot water and a working boiler/heating and he only charged me £30.

I found an old pair of slippers I'd almost forgotten and I think they'll see me through too. Yay for not buying new stuff!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

It has been really warm today but definitely Autumnal IYKWIM. Scotland (well where I am) always seems to be like this at this time of the year and I know really soon it will be dark at 4pm and I will be wearing my winters. All my clothes have been overhauled and sorted ready for the weather and I think I'm suitably stocked up. Just need another hot water bottle and I think I'm done.....
