Just reading through this thread, it's like winter here today already.

I'm making a list 5 pairs of curtains, carpet for kitchen and bathroom as they have ceramic tiles and are freezing in the winter.

I changes some things in my living room for summer - curtains, lampshades etc, don't know why I bothered may as well go back to winter now for all the summer we've had or will get. I miss my rosy glow lamshade that greets us when we come home and it's gone dark :D

    Hi everyone,

As the information in both of the Preparing for Winter threads is relevant for any year I have merged both threads together to avoid confusion and to keep all the ideas together.

Becca light something really smokey and stand back, watch to see if it comes out the top ok and if it comes out anywhere else as well ! In the UK you used to be able to get a video from the coal board on how to unblock a chimney step by step.

Lots of good ideas on this thread!
    We'll need:
    - slippers for all (most have, but need for little ones as their feet grew)
    - extra curtain liners
    - throw rugs or off cut fitted for upstairs hallway and dining room
    - thick curtain/liner for front door and rear door
    - start deciding on what to stock up on and where to keep it
    - start knitting (sweaters, vests, mittens)
    - check stock of blankets and duvets
    - check candle stock (should be okay, I love candles and have quite a few!)
    - find out about frequency of power cuts in winter here as we have just moved - if so, may need to look at that candle stove for emergencies.

We have an open fireplace in the dining room that is not in very good shape (cosmetically), and the council gave us the option that they will either restore the fireplace or simply close it up and have it plastered over and leave as a decorative fireplace. We're having it closed up, as we already have a working fireplace in the living room. So we won't need to worry about messing around with two fireplaces.

Im getting ready for winter already as well.I'm still stocked up off last winter but I do need a couple of draught excluders.I always make mine with some polystyrene pipe cover. The stuff plumbers insulate pipes with. It's cheap and you can make a draught excluder of any length that fits snug and look very neat by just fitting some fabric to match the room.It has a slot through it so you can just push the fabric in and stuff the ends of the fabric in the holes either end.Change the fabric when it gets dirty. It also keeps the heat in realy well as it's used for insulating anyway and if you can't sew is ideal.
I did buy a a couple of extra hot water bottles and some more throws for the living room, with the cost of fuel promising to sky rocket I think we'll be needing them.
Is'nt it sad though to have to be thinking like this already, particularly since we've not even had any summer yet.

It's chiily, dark, damp and dreary here, I've put the heating for a short while to take the dampness away, no summer here.
