Morning everyone, I've not been here in a while as I've been enjoying the good weather and, to be honest, I've not had anything to post. Now that it's almost August my thoughts are turning to winter and what I need to do as prep as I can't afford to move overseas til April :(.

I need to go through my wardrobe to see if my winter bits need repair/replacing. I definitely need table lamps and a floor lamp for the living-room, with mega bright bulbs to reduce my winter blues.

Had thought about changing my curtains but will dye them instead and find a better way of attaching the Primark fleeces to them rather than the pins I'm currently using.

Just had a thought: Where can I get (cheap or reasonably priced) blankets? I think they will make a lovely addition to the quilts I have.

    Cheers!

Now that is very thrifty, reclaiming wool from a £1 scarf! :T I like the sound of the neckwarmer - I have something like that, a Buff headband made of finely knit wool that you can wear in several different ways. Last winter I wore it around my neck and lifted it up to cover my nose and face. Cost a lot more than £1 though!

A fleece neckwarmer is sometimes called "snood" which is a fabulous word. They work exceptionally well, a buff or snood round the neck and a fleece hat can keep you toasty warm even at -20C as I discovered in a Swedish winter.

Snood! That's it, I remember the word from the 80s when Nik Kershaw wore one! :D
I have 2 Buffs, a wool and a normal type, and they worked a treat last winter - one around my neck and over my nose. The other as a headband pulled over my ears when a hat got too warm. But we were nowhere near -20C or I guess I would have needed the fleece type!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Mardatha hope you don't mind me asking how do you dry lavender i love the smell of lavender i'm trying to grow it but i'm not good at growing stuff used to be.I think once i get one thing to stay alive i'll be ok got to start somewhere

Cut the stems of lavender back to old wood (otherwise the area for new growth gets less year on year) put the stems head down in a brown paper bag or any paper bag. Hang up or lay flat to dry gently at warm room temperature out of direct sun. (bag helps keep light off and ensures you don't lose any). When flowers are dry rub them off into the bag and discard stems (or burn them on fire or barbie for their scent).

Charity shops are good for blankets - you could dye them as well as the fleeces for a bit of extra oomph!
  • Talking of putting the heating on!! I got a letter this morning from my gas provider to advise that my prepayment meter is due to be replaced next week and that any credit on it will be reimbursed 28 days later. Phoned up to change the date as it wasn't convenient and was chatting to the the young lad on the phone about the length of time for the reimbursement especially as I have 85.00 quid on mine, when he advised that I could always try and use it up in the next week or 2!!! Glad he's not mine!!!

I just cut the lavender at the bottom of the stalks, and tied them in wee bunches with purple ribbon Seakay. I hope they will dry like that and it will make a pretty present.
