After last winter's salt shortage, I have a 5 litre bucket is almost filled with the stuff. It keeps forever, so I just keep adding a packet to it whenever I get the chance of the 20p packs. :).

Do you just use table salt? Where do you get packs for 20p each from? I also got a bucket for my salt but was going to take soem from the grit bin at the end of the road & was then informed that would be stealing!!

Princess kate try your local supermarket for their Value bags of salt (i.e. Tesco, Morrison, Asda) they are around 20p. Can't remember how much is in it though.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

Another small input to the winter pile today. Wilkinson's have some fleece insoles for 97p a pair so I picked up a couple of pairs for out boots. Now we can have slipper-style toastiness (hopefully!). You cut them to size, so I'm going to keep the fleecy trimmings and either use them for protecting glasses in transit or general or for plugging up gaps in the door (keyholes, etc) when it gets REALLY cold.

    Ooh fleece insoles sound toasty!

Does anyone know what those things like snow chains for shoes are called? I read about them on MSE and thought they sounded great ... might get some for this winter.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Hmm... I'm preparing now for winter and for the C word from this week. So this week I need to do the following:

    -New Pj's in fleece
    -Dry clean my winter coat
    -Look out my hats
    -Handwash my angora gloves
-repaint my living room as it is looking a bit worse for wear
-New slippers with backs for the cold
-Pot on my winter veg in the garden
    -Order my winter flowering bulbs
-Start my chutneys so they have three months to mature
-Sew up a couple of holes in some of my jumpers. Does anyone know where I can get darning wool? I can remember John Lewis doing it but not sure if they do it now....?
-Make a sausage dog for the top door to keep the heat in. I must find a pattern.....!
-New hot water bottle for the night time
    Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.79

Found them! There seem to be a few different brands but I quite like the look of YakTrax. Has anyone used them or similar?

Thank you, is this salt ok for icy conditions then? The council stuff is just gritty too I guess?
  • NulaBula i have the Yak Trax i got them from qvc they were two pairs in a pack i got 2 lots for me my eldest and my two at home but i've misplaced 1 pack must have a dig around see if they turn up they are really worth every penny i keep mine in my shopper trolley front pouch one of my boys started laughing when i stopped to put them on last year after deciding it was too slippy without guess who nearly went flying .......I'll give you a clue NOT ME took a bit of getting used to wouldn't be with out. My eldest has to walk across a car park on her way to work before i gave her a pair she had a few near misses with the ice must remind her to keep them by the door ready for this winter i saw quite a few people on crutches just before xmas and i was very glad i got mine hope you manage to get some too
