Preparing for Winter

Does anyone know where I can get darning wool? I can remember John Lewis doing it but not sure if they do it now....?
Good morning.
On socks, I use embroidery thread (cheap from a local shop). For jumpers, and the similar, I would find normal, everyday, wool of a matching (or as near as darn* it) thread width and colour and use that.

Starting to think about preparing for winter:
1. Crocheting a hexagon blanket to be kept in the living room. The hexagons are much denser than granny squares so it should make a lovely warm blanket.
2. Knitting some thick winter socks out of DK yarn.
3. Knitting a neck warmer for winter walking, I'm making it extra long in a chunky rib stitch so it can be pulled up over my face to keep out the wind. That's why I love making things, you can make them exactly the way you want
4. More knitting!! I fancy some kind of beret and I've got some chunky cream yarn so that will probably be my next project.
5. Searching for winter warmer slow cooker recipes, haven't got one yet but I will invest in one once it starts getting a bit colder.
6. Drying lavendar to make little lavendar bags for my sock drawers (using OHs old boxer shorts)
7. Saving for a new winter coat, haven't got a decent one so I'm gonna invest in a wool duffle coat this year.0 -
Agree re neck warmers, I love them, much better idea than scarves. I have a pr of socks here looking at saying "finish us".... I'm starting to get in the mood for knitting again, slowly. I am cutting & drying lavender too, got a bit of muslin to use for bags. That added to home made jam will be nice in hampers.
Another horrible dull day again here - been warm but low grey clouds, is horrible.0 -
My Dd got a lovely hooded coat from Primark for 17 quid! Its brown subtle check and looks very smart - bargain!Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Thanks for the feeback Muffin Man ... I was thinking of going for the YakTrax Pro (I saw them on Ebay). Just didn't want to waste money on something that turns out not to work! There quite a few gentle hills where I live and trying to get down the them on frozen snow and ice last winter was treacherous! :eek:Good morning.

Great list FunkyMonkey - but what is a neckwarmer, some kind of scarf?
Mardatha, that's what our weather has been like recently - quite stifling really, yuk. We have a wee bit of sun just now but don't think it will last - there's a lot of dark clouds. It's kind of funny to be sat here roasting and planning all the cosy stuff for winter!:)Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

You can grow it inside on the windowsill if you have to. needs heat and sun, south facing is best
I just pick it and lay it in a tray in the spare room and leave it . It dries itself

Yes but it's like a tube so you pop it over your head instead of wrapping it round your neck. Much better than a scarf because it won't come undone or leave gaps or get too tight or too loose.
I've also made matching wristwarmers to go on top of gloves for extra warmth
Both were made from a scarf I bought in the sale at H&M for £1, I unravveled the scarf cos I didn't like the style and ended up with 300g of chunky yarn.0 -
