I've got the cling film stuff on the porch windows, following which it has got warmer so I don't know yet if any good. Quite easy to put on though and not too noticeable there.0

I think I remember reading somewhere that a double duvet is the perfect size for a mattress topper for a King size bed.... Can anyone confirm this please before I go and buy one ?
Many thanks
our double duvet was a good size for the superkingsize we've got.. its not quite long enough head to foot but its perfect side to side.

Well we had our first power cut on saturday night  luckily I had my candles and torch all ready. I put my old duvet under my matress and got my sheets and blankets on my bed, I do think thats much cosier with all the layers. Washed and put on my sons throw for over his duvet.
Will be doing a big shop next week to stock up.
Bought a lovely thick pair of velvet curtains (on EBay)for living room so that will be much cosier.

Oh I've also realised that if I HAVE to have the tumble dryer on, I just study in the kitchen where it's all cosy, then I dont have to put on the halogen heater I have for the living roomChristmas 2010: cashback £124.50, Tesco clubcard points: 4220, Nectar points: 1037, Dooyoo miles: 15770, Harrispoll: 2490

Just read somewhere that there are widespread power cuts likely this winter due to capacity, so all these things we are doing will be extra useful. I might buy another wind up torch so OH and I aren't fighting for it.
Just thought - if we haven't got the heating on, we'll be saving lots of other people from having power cuts too.0 -
Hey all,
I've just moved to a little village, and I hear from the locals I'm likely to suffer power cuts during the winter. Any suggestions on preparations I should make?
I've got a wind-up LED lamp and a camping stove. And after reading this thread I've ordered a "wee willie winky" style candle lamp and candle holder.
I have gas central heating, but I'm told this will stop working as the pump is electric.
Many thanks!!

Sort out the snuggly duvets ready to go to the cleaners.
Me being quite cheap, i washed them in the bath with a little powder and rinsed a few times, it was hard going carrying down stairs to hang out the back drying but def cheaper than cleaner's and was lovely and clean!! good exercise toI have dyslexia, so get used to my spelling and grammarMortgage pay off date 11/2028. Fill up a material bag with raw rice...leave plenty of 'air space' and then sew up the open end, to make a completely sealed sack of rice. This can then be placed in teh microwave when you want it hot.
How long do you heat it for? had one as pressie last year and lost the instructions!
I put it in the micro on full power, for about 3 minutes..but i keep an 'eye' on it and give it another blast if the bags are still not hot enough. But my micro is very old and and doesen't seem to work very efficiently ( should probably get rid of it, as i suspect it may be leaking microwaves..but that's another thread!).
THe first time you heat the rice, it gives off moisture, and a smell (tho not unpleasant)..but this gets better wtih each re-heat. I find the rice bags retain their heat for a long time.0 -

I'm going to ask for a wind up torch for Chrimbo.... Saves money on batteries and is green, but also means I won't need to worry about the batteries going flat when I need it.April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500
