That's really cheap. When they first came out they cost about £60. I might have a look for one.

Something that has just occurred to me - if anybody DOES experience Power Cuts, then our DECT phones won't work!

    What is a DECT phone?

I'm going to ask for a wind up torch for Chrimbo.... Saves money on batteries and is green, but also means I won't need to worry about the batteries going flat when I need it.

I am going to get a few of those torches as well!

Have got masses of candles, OH has put up blackout blinds in the kitchen and bathroom, going to put the winter duvet on the bed tomorrow with the summer duvet on the mattress under the sheet.

Also got loads of bedsocks and some warm jammies and dressing gowns and a pair of slippers upstairs and downstairs, as I am scared to wear them when walking down the stairs. I can just see myself going headfirst into our wedding photo, which is on the table at the foot of the stairs!

Got in loads of tinned food, porridge, longlife milk, bottled water, tissues, cough mixture, paracetamol and loo rolls.

The ginger wine, with ginger ale, angastura bitters and a fresh slice of lemon, slips down nicely too! Will add a splash of brandy when the cold really sets in.

Part of my Dad's present last Christmas was an "emergency box", containing wind up torch, wind up radio, tealights and safe holders, big box matches and a few other bits. I caught him fishing it out the other day "to be on the safe side". Unfortunately they were both poorly last week so I gave them the wheat bags for their achey bits.

the torch of the tesco radio/torch isnt powerful but very useful to have to hand when the lights go out. I have one on my bedside cabinet and one in the living room.

DECT is a cordless phone, not sure what the initials actually stand for - something like digitally enhanced I think ...

Oh I've just remembered something, our gas central heating is powered by electric, if that makes sense:rolleyes: so during power cuts it does not work and we have no heating other than the open fire in the front room and no hot water as its a combi boiler. I know alot of people do have additional gas fires as backup but it may be worth checking your system if you don't.

things we need to do are:

    check antifreeze in car,

make some sort of cover for patio heater lid as high winds have been losening the lid and you can hear it squeaking. last year it blew off:eek: into next doors garden.

peg down the trampoline as last year it flew into two doors down garden and was only stopped by their washing poles:eek:.

we also have to repair our fence, as it has already been partly blown off.

    Hi everyone

Have been reading this thread for ages and using lots of the tips (thanks!!). Went shopping yesterday and found something that might be useful.....

Matalan have a combined wind up torch/mobile phone charger in their gift section. £8 each and on 3 for 2 offer.
    Hope it helps someone. Cat.
  • Well we have just had our first power cut and as partner was running around like a lune i calmly lit the candels turned off all sockets and made him a cup of tea from flask on the side needless to say he was very shocked/impressed i then went down to my elderly neighbours and made sure she was ok and gave her cup of tea and torch so proud of myself for being so organised was even ready to get camping stove out but sadly electric came back on:D
