What are you putting in your snow cupboard? I think I would like to adopt this idea too (if you don't mind!)
I can only think of a shovel and salt so far
So far, not much. I thought of
UHT milk
bottled water
salt, sugar, oil and flour
tins of beans, soup, tuna and meat in sauces
bread substitute - ryvita and oatcakes
matches and firelighters
washing up liquid, washing powder, softener
toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and soap
and it's in the pantry so all my bottled fruit and veg count too.
In fact, if anyone has any better ideas, particularly if they have actually been snowed in, I would be grateful0 -
he he, been reading this thread on and off for ages now. finally got off my bum tonight and sorted out the medicine box - was full of OOD meds and half courses of this and that. have split the remainder into 2 boxes - 1 box is just for general painkillers & cold / flu relief stuff so ibuprofen, Calpol, lemsips, beechams, vicks nasal spray, cold sore stuff, lockets, lozenges etc.
the other box is everything else - plasters, savlon, rennies etc. this makes it easier for me to see what i actually have, and it makes it easier for OH to find what he is looking for - always ibuprofen! and if we are up in the middle of the night it saves rummaging through one huge box of gear just to find a lemsip.
also made a start on the powercut box. was slightly alarmed to discover i only had 2 rubbishy little candles ( not birthday cake size - but not v big either) and a box of cooks matches with a competition on that ended in 1996 !!! bought in 1994 when I left home - lol! Hmm!, think this one may need some work. I couldn't find my wind up torch either - suspect DS has it hidden in his room... apart from that though couldn't think what else to put in.... any more suggestions please?
A pack of cards? I remember playing old fashioned games in the power cuts in the 70s0 -

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -

peanut butter is cheap protein and is really nice on ryvita plus you don't have to cook it!
i'd def put some bog roll in that lot, if you got snowed in for awhile you might get caught out
candles too just in case you have a power cut
maybe some dried fruit too and possibly, to perk things up if you're snowed in for several days a treat of some sort like a box of chocolates or bag of some other junk food everyone likes... when times are 'hard' even the small things perk people up0 -
I`m very pleased with myself cos i`ve just been to Sainsburys and bought and huge soft snuggly dressing gown :j i`ve not had one for years as i got fed up of the dog brushing past me and covering it with hairs but the doggies that we have now don`t seem to shed as badly as the one we had previously.
Can`t wait for tonight when i can snuggle up in it.
Upstairs i`ve found two bags of tealight candles and some oils so now i have to rummage through all the boxed up stuff and find my oil burner. I have two little holders for the tealights so all is not lost if i can`t find the burner but i used to love the scent on a cold winters night when i walked into the room and it looked really cosy with little lights on the fire place.
My wind up torch is on a shelf in the kitchen but i`m still waiting for the lantern to be delivered, i ordered a lantern for Dad too. I know that he will use it instead of the reading lamp at night.
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -

I was wondering what to do with odd gloves  Maybe we should all start saving them then have an annual round-up - a good excuse for a meet-up of like minded people

I'm going to try and make something like this:
http://shop.scotsman.com/I-DD-DRAUGHT-FUN-1/double-draught-excluder.htm
I guessed if I used some foam rolls, a bit like you get to insulate pipes, and a bit of material with 2 straight pockets sewn in either side, it should work?
This does work - I made two of them while I was off work for the summerThey might not be so neat & tidy, but they do the job and make a noticeable difference
All I did was made one large pocket of material (open one end) that was wide enough to fit in the two pieces of pipe lagging and go under the door comfortably. Once I was sure it would fit I just did a row of straight stitch right up the middle (don't try and do this while its inside out... you can't turn it the right way if you do that
:o:whistle:) After checking again that it still fitted I stitched the end up by hand
Very happy with them, and the front/back/kitchen door curtains I've made out the same upholstery fabric

Knit or crochet a blanket? As the weather gets colder you'll find you knit faster and faster, just to make it big enough to cover more and more of you, lol.Val.0 -

Two night's ago we were sitting with woolly hats on because we were so cold. We gave up and put the heating on for a few hours last night. It is back off again now. We are getting double glazing fitted next week and I wanted to wait until then because I knew it would be warmer, I hope to get to at least October.MFW 2025 No. 7 £1130/£1200
