Preparing for Winter

How about making small heat pads out of your odd gloves? Fill with wheat or lavender, or barley, a few drops of essential oils, sew up the wrist, and hey presto, a pocket warmer!!When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0

Any gloves, hats or scarfes lying in the sreet, bring them home. I've bunged my find in the washing machine as I've gone along and now have a whole 2 carrier bags full of them. Not all the gloves match but we do have several good pairs, and a beautiful brand new Field and Trek fleece scarf I found outside a hospital.
By the end of the year we have to merge our finds and see if there are anything worth keeping, so far all my finds have been superb quality. I haven't found any kiddies stuff, only adults.
Ive threatened to put hubby's gloves on string, like i did when the kids were tiny after the amount of gloves he lost last year0 -
thanks, nippyone, I'll have a better look around! Only think is, don't think either of those stores are anywhere near me, but now I have a better price to aim for, I'll beat lidl's price if it kills me! The hunt is one!!!!:D

I'll keep my eyes open and if I see any at a reasonable price I'll post it here!;)0 -
Winner! We have apple trees, plum trees and a pear tree in our back garden. Having just moved on Thurs and attacking the jungle of a garden, right at the back there are some lovely fruit trees - think im going to be busy making things for winter with them, any ideas? Jams and apple pie so far on my list!

if you do decide to chuck anything out eventually perhaps you could offer up the mismatched things to any people you see selling the big issue or such like, i'm certain they would be greatly appreciative whereas a charity shop would just bin them0 -
Uniqlo have got a sale on at the moment of some of their Heattech thermals. Also if you have a student in the family they get a 10% discount. They are not especially cheap but they do look good and they come in quite nice colours not just black and hearing aid beigeIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

he he, been reading this thread on and off for ages now. finally got off my bum tonight and sorted out the medicine box - was full of OOD meds and half courses of this and that. have split the remainder into 2 boxes - 1 box is just for general painkillers & cold / flu relief stuff so ibuprofen, Calpol, lemsips, beechams, vicks nasal spray, cold sore stuff, lockets, lozenges etc.
the other box is everything else - plasters, savlon, rennies etc. this makes it easier for me to see what i actually have, and it makes it easier for OH to find what he is looking for - always ibuprofen! and if we are up in the middle of the night it saves rummaging through one huge box of gear just to find a lemsip.
also made a start on the powercut box. was slightly alarmed to discover i only had 2 rubbishy little candles ( not birthday cake size - but not v big either) and a box of cooks matches with a competition on that ended in 1996 !!! bought in 1994 when I left home - lol! Hmm!, think this one may need some work. I couldn't find my wind up torch either - suspect DS has it hidden in his room... apart from that though couldn't think what else to put in.... any more suggestions please?credit card debt at LBM Nov 2006 £11,300:eek:
credit card debt now £0000000000000!!! :j

Buxtonrabbit. I am bemused at the idea of hanging a thick Duvet behind a door? Just how would you do that? You live..You learn.:)0

After last year, when this board spurred me on to get everything done I only have one thing I need to do to prepare us for winter and that is some pointing to the brickwork.
I'm finding this the most impossible job to get done since no builders seem to ever return my calls or turn up when I ring and ask them to come and give me an estimate.
I can't find a single one.
I guess you'd think in this economic climate people would'nt be so quick to turn down the chance of what is quite a substantial job.
I just hope I find someone before the weather changes.
I'm loving reading all your posts and seeing what everyone else is doing.0
