Preparing for Winter

well i'm over the moon. few post ago i wrote about having lost the cot duvet for my son, well.
hubby went into loft to get down all the spare duvets for topping the materess and when i opened out our spare kingsize duvet it was folded up inside that. i am so pleased.
but it also made me realise we never took our 13.5 tog duvet off our bed for the summer, so the thick duvet i was hoping to get out for our bed is actually our 4.5 summer one. so hope i don't find it too cold this winter. i have tho got lots of blankets and thick throws for bed's.0 -
Currently getting myself ready for the winter. I hate the cold, would rather be hungry.
I am in desperate need of some thermal underwear. Does quality differ a great deal?Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -
That's good news!
You could always add the summer duvet to the winter one. Just use a few safety pins to keep them together.0 -

Good idea. I was thinking of buying some thinner summer duvets (hoping they're on offer somewhere as everyone will want warmer ones now) and using some sticky back velcro to hold them together.Dum Spiro Spero0 -

Yup, the velcro is another option but I'm not sure how well the sticky velcro holds up in the wash.
If you don't fancy sewing velcro, I think I'd opt for the easy peasy option of safety pins! I would go for that rather than sewing, even though I have a sewing machine! :rotfl:0 -
I know people say that blinds at the windows can help a lot with insulation, but does anyone know which type of blind is most effective? Roller blinds, maybe? I'd love some shutters at the windows, but as my budget is precisely zilch, I think that idea will have to wait!
Any ideas??

My dad came and put up some thermal roller blinds in my living room for me,the only problem is they are not a close fit due to the kind of windows i have.I dont yet know how effective they are for the winter but i have to say they did help keep the heat out during the really sunny days we had.I have finally found some curtains that will fit my livingroom. They are lined velvet and look really nice.I need some more blankets for winter and need to decide what im going to use to line the childrens curtains. Not sure what we are going to do about on the beds the spare duvets i used under the sheets last year needed binned for various reasons.Just need to get some slippers and new cosy pjs for children and ill just about be ready for the cold.

We do the same, think it must be my hormones as well, throughout the summer I have a really thin 4tog king size duvet, then for winter I put a single 7tog on top.
Dh on the other hand has a 15tog king size duvet all year round and will sometimes also put an extra fleece blanket on top in winter.
We no heat source in our bedroom, I have my window permanently open, I will sometimes put a tshirt on over my nightie but only because I like to sleep with my arms on top of the duvet and my shoulders get cold and then achy.
I do the same - the lightest quilt in the summer and then add a mid-weight one on top when it gets cold. And I sleep with my windows open all year round - I cannot stand a warm bedroom!
My computers in my bedroom and i'm actually sitting here with goosebumps as i'm typing this!:rotfl:0 -
Well I bought a lovely hwb & fleece cover today in primark for just under £4.00, also got curtains ironed and hung up. Feel like I'm getting there, we will probably have a heat wave starting next week!!

Bring on a heat wave cos I'm feeling chilly. I'm determined this year to last til Nov before switching on heating but I'm already using a fleece when watching tv.0
