Theory is that it's not so much the temperature, it's the lack if ventilation and the increase in soft surfaces ie fitted carpets. When we had lino and good air flow round the house (ie draughts) the dust mite population in the house was much lower.

    I'm sure that's right, too!

When I was small, my nan used to open all bedroom windows wide and throw sheets/blankets back off the beds to 'air them out' while we had breakfast. Around lunchtime, she would remake the beds, shaking the pillows and then mop the lino floor-covering with disinfectant and lower the sash windows so they were only open an inch or so. On really cold days, the windows would get closed completely when it got dark and the curtains drawn shut to preserve what little warmth there was in the house. The bedrooms always felt 'fresh and airy' and no chest infections/asthma!
  • Hi everyone!

Can I just say thanks to all who post such good ideas! :j

I went to Tescos today and got some thermal long johns reduced to £2!!! I would never have thought to look for them in August, but this thread and a chilly early morning start inspired me. So started to prepare for winter and got a bargain!!!
    Thanks

Thanks - am quietly starting to pap myself as my date gets closer!

I do have plenty of hats and blankets to wrap him in - I just worry he'll be too cold or too warm but I guess learning all that is the joy of motherhood
I soooo remember that feeling too..all three times! The first because I din't know what to expect, the second because I did & the last because I would have three babies well under four years of age to contend with! BUT--I did it! I look back & wonder mesen how I kept my sanity, but the "prize" is so much more of a reward than following any materialistic thoughts would have got me.
My very best wishes to the three of you, for a lifetime filled with Love & Laughter. x

  • My biggest issue in our house is a mystery draft that blows down the stairs.
We had this problem and found out it was coming from the loft hatch so DH insulated the hatch itself and the surround and we seem to have the problem sorted.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

You don't need a popcorn maker. If you just cover the base of a saucepan (which has a lid!) with oil, heat it and then half cover the base with corn. Put the lid on quick and when you hear popping take the pan off the heat and shake it. When the popping noise stops carefully take the lid off, it will probably be overflowing anyway.

Do you need to heat the oil quite high and leave it high while the corn is in?

When I brought my premature son home we had to keep the bedroom very hot but that was many years ago.

Ok Im sat here freezing, think its time to gear up. Got to make curtains for bathroom and loo with fleece liner and put my woolies on - theres no way am putting the heating on in August

    Right todays achievements:

Very pleased as I replaced the bubble wrap on the glass panel instead of double glazing and I am very pleased it is a lot neater than what I did last year. Duck tape on front door can last another year.

Aired the front door curtain and draft excluders on the line and they're all back neat and tidy now.

Bought some water bottles to pop in the breakdown box and another pair of cheap thick tights from primarni!

Not exactly MS but very nice all the same and is this month's treat, bought a yankee yandle and tea lights to give out some nice candle light and fragrance.
My oil burner must have known somehow as the glass cover inexplicably shattered this afternoon when I moved it!

Food stocks review next week then nearly ready!

To be honest our way isn't exactly scientific. I tend to put the oil on to heat (electric cooker so not instant) ~then dig about in the cupboard looking for the corn that was there last time I looked. Then once found I have to hunt for scissors to cut pack open, and only then do I pour the corn in. so yes, I probably do heat it quite hot, but not usually till it smokes it could all burn then. After putting in corn, I take pan off heat and shake. If once the popping stops there still seem to be a few kernels in the pan, I might put it back on the heat for a bit, but it isn't usually needed. I never leave it on the heat when the corn is popping though. HTH.

Thanks for all the popcorn tips I have a bag of unopened kernals languishing in the pantry.

I bought them with the thought of being MS then wasn't very sure about how to cook them! Might have some tonight as a treat after tea!
