I'm considering buying a sleeping bag to put inside my bed, under the duvet. I work nights and my house is freezing in the winter when I get home in the morning, but as I am going straight to bed it isn't worth putting the heating on. Has anyone tried this?

:rotfl:Add a pair of bed socks and hot water bottle and you will be as warm as toast! :rotfl:Sleep well!

Ikea have some from as little as £1.69 for 170cms x 130cms.

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00070489 (pale blue only - 170cms x 130cms - £1.69)

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80089927 (white/red/green/navy/black/ - 170cms x 130cms - £2.79)

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20119183

    (NOT FLEECE - orange/brown/dark grey/green - acrylic/polyester/mohair - 170cms x 130cms - £5.99

I'm not sure how big (or how small) 170cms x 130cms actually is, but if you live near an Ikea, it may be worth having a nosey around the store :).

It's always a good idea to check out your local Poundland, Poundstretcher, InShops, B&M Bargains, HomeBargains, Wilkinsons etc as they often have good bargains in their shops.

wow thanks for the info, I was planning to go to ikea in the next few weeks and they look just what i'm after :D
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

The Ikea fleeces that are £2.79 are lovely and warm. I've got a few of them.
  • i stocked up for winter today for first time ever :), i spent an absolute fortune but it will save money in the long run. I got the following

pair of lined curtains for the front door - such a draught comes through there and the main thermostat thing is in the hall
curtain pole - oh's dad is going to put that up for me
lots of candles for those long winter nights
2 double duvets for use on the sofa's rather than blankets
    mattress topper for our bed

I also went to costco and was surprised that they had some christmas stuff in so i stocked up on wrapping paper and cards and got a couple of presents as well as my general bulk buy fill the house to the brim shop.

Planning on getting a slow cooker so that i can make lots of filling comfort food but want to know if they are safe to leave when no one is home during the day? also going to get (when i can find one) a popcorn maker for cheap semi nutritious snacks.

i thought the ikea ones looked nice so i checked their site....and now they do delivery!!!

BUT: - they tell me delivery to Yorkshire.....would be £35!:eek::eek:

Unless you spend £500  then it is free delivery.
It is £45 from the Bletchley store to Dunstable a whopping 13 miles:rolleyes:

  • just been reading back and have more to do! 2nd winter in a house the first we coped fine but there is so much more i can do to make it better after reading what some people are going to be doing :)

    1. must make a car emergency box. very important as i now drive and will be using the car to get to work. thinking torch, aa membership details, warning triangle thingey, couple of bottles of juice, box of cereal bars, blankets and some cash - say £20 as a mix of change and a note?
    2. getting salt for the front path so i dont break my neck.
    3. digging out the dehumidifier for when drying clothes in the house.
    4. getting matches. i only have a lighter so might be a wise investment of a few pence.
    5. emergency box for the house. i'm a worrier and people talking about power cuts means i want to be prepared for all weather. in this im thinking torch, candles, matches, corkscrew, hot chocolate, marshmallows and a big bar of chocolate! gas hob so will be able to get a hot drink and a hot meal even if cooking by candle light. corkscrew so i dont need to go rooting round for one as wine by candlelight is nice ;)
    6. get some uht milk in
    7. making sure the medicine box is stocked with decongestents and vick's
    8. new toweling dressing gown so that i can alternate giving each time to dry out
    9. thick socks for oh as i can wear his socks but he cant wear mine :)
    10. hat, scarf and gloves for both of us
    11. slippers for us both
    12. dig out the electric radiator for bedroom - boost the bedroom heat for a little bit before bed making the room nice and toasty
    13. change lightweight duvet to 13.5tog duvet on our bed
    14. find and buy flannelette sheets
    15. see if asda still do the terry bedding in a bag (had this years ago and it was lovely and toasty warm)
    16. buy flask in case of power cut and needing to heat water. the water will then stay hot without needing to keep heating it on the stove.
    17. get some nice bubble bath for those nights when it is truely awful.
    18. get plug in landline rather than cordless phones in case power does go out. would be nice to be able to make a phonecall rather than using mobile.
    19. make the board games more accesable than they are now for something to do if powercut does happen.
    20. buy a battery powered/wind up radio just in case.

think thats plenty for me to be getting on with and for the most part its not going to cost that much well not compared wtih what ive spend today :rotfl:

  • Certainly an Autumnal nip in the air tonight - had to put a cardi on
DH was going to clear the gutters today and put some gutter mesh on but it was so wet and windy he has left it to the weekend.
Have got to get the men in my life to get the garden sorted and make sure that the outside of the house has any repair work done if needed.
Just finished making a new front door curtain and have backed it with an ikea fleece for extra insulation.
I have made 3 draught excluders and am in the process of making a few sausage type ones for the windows that haven't been replaced with upvc yet.
Am going to bubble wrap the back of the house because that is where the cold wind always gets to. Used plastic last year - it helped but I think we could be in for a cold December so to hell with looking nice - being warm is what counts. I am going to fix it with sticky back velcro this year because getting the double sided tape off from last year was a cow of a job.
New boiler should be here in three weeks so will have to go without heating for a couple of days but it will be worth it.
I will have to get some warmer clothes out of my wardrobe methinks.

It's a bit nippy here too!

I have a long sleeved zip up seatshirt top on and a blanket over my legs. This weekend is for redoing the bubblewrap on the glass panel above the door. I think this worked well last year and it's come unstuck now.

I am determined to not put the heating on yet but I am getting more tempted as each day cools a bit more. Better dig out the blanket for my bed and put the flannel bedding on as I can feel my feet cooling rapidly (so soon, in August?)

Medicine stocks are all ok, plus got a pack of 7 mens cotton hankerchiefs from Home Bargains for £1.99 this week and a pale mauve fleece scarf for 99p. Going back again to see if there any nice hats and gloves in soon!

What is left to do? Get a box for powercut box and fill up with things, get batteries for radio and put some things in the car breakdown box now I have one

  • One thing I have to do is meal plan for winter (Love winter food - fed up with salad now).
Then fill up freezers and cupboards with everything I need because I find it difficult to get out much when it is icy with my gammy legs, so I tend to have as much in as possible. I hate having to put too much on the shoulders of my DH and kids.

good list - can I suggest maybe a battery operated mobile charger; when I was driving long distances to work I stressed about keeping my mobile charged, especially during winter. I think you can buy battery operated ones now? ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
