Preparing for Winter

I really need to read all of this thread and not just odd pages.
This winter I will be home everyday cos I'm on Maternity Leave and at present OH doesn't have a job - our lecy bill over the last 3 months as been higher than normal with him home during the day!
I have 2 of those IRMA IKEA blankets and they are toasty (but can't remember where they are) so will get some more of those.
Could do with putting a thick curtain up by front door as we do get a draft and draft excluder already in place! Think I will also get some thicker curtains to go across patio doors out to conservatory as am sure we lose heat there as well.
My worry is that OH and I can quite easily put layers on and snuggle under a blanket but I will worry about the baby!
I start my batch cooking next week (in prepararation for baby's arrival) and am already looking forward to casserole!!!
I'm in the North West and today we have had torrential rain, strong winds and the odd bit of sunshine. I'm barefoot and my tootsies are cold!A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea
Where does the time go? :think:0 -
good list - can I suggest maybe a battery operated mobile charger; when I was driving long distances to work I stressed about keeping my mobile charged, especially during winter. I think you can buy battery operated ones now?
Good idea for keeping in the house, but don't you have a charger that plugs into the lighter socket of a car?0 -

Try turning the thermostat down and wrap the baby in a shawl with a bonnet the bonnet will help to keep him warmBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thanks - am quietly starting to pap myself as my date gets closer!
I do have plenty of hats and blankets to wrap him in - I just worry he'll be too cold or too warm but I guess learning all that is the joy of motherhoodA very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

These days they say babies should not be in too hot a room as it increases risk of cot death - so don't worry too much, just keep babe's head and hands warm and enough blankets to keep temperature constant.
After all when you go out in the winter with baby in the pram that is what you do and it seems quite normal.
I didn't have a crib when the babies were small, I used the carry cot on top of a table. It was very sheltered and free from draughts and they were snug as bugs even the one who was born in December just before one of our coldest Januaries
All the best!! (can't wait for grandbabies - but that's a few years off yet!)It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

no I'm thinking of a battery powered one that would be usful if the car broke down and I don't have a car any more so no I dont have a charger that plugs in to the lighter socket, the suggestion was for someone else... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Ah, I see.
You can also get solar powered ones. Probably not great for using the phone for long, but may be ok for a quick emergency call.0 -

you can, i gave one as a gift to my ex a few years ago
you can also get usb mobile chargers and i just bought a combo wind up torch/radio/mobile charger though i haven't tested it's charging capability0 -

actually, from what i've read, most people tend to overheat babies vs them getting too cold! for bedtime you can put on extra socks and mits for their hands (keeps them from scratching their face too which is a bonus) and even a wee beanie hat at night could be a good idea if you're worried.
if the babies skin feels cold then they need another layer, otherwise i wouldn't worry too much about it unless your wee one is prone to respiratory problems (though that said when you have that type of illness a hot house is worse for you than a cool one!)
actually taped to my desk i have one of those cheap cardboard nursery thermometers from Hipp 18 is just right, 15 is cool but it doesn't say it's too cool til you get to 10 degrees and i'm fairly certain YOU wouldn't suffer with that let alone put a baby through it so i shouldn't worry too much0 -
When mine were little I always used to worry about this but as everyone else has said, they're far healthier if slightly cool than too warm. A tip re bathtime though, when they can get chilled. I used to warm one room up well with elec heater, all doors etc shut. (kitchen for me) then bath baby in bath on kitchen table, wash and dress him, all in the warmth. You could use washing up bowl or even the sink. Worked well. Only when dry and dressed did I then release the rest of the house into the kitchen.
