Preparing for Winter

Ethel Austin have a 20 per cent off everything sale at the moment.
I got a pair of mens thermal long johns and a long sleeved mens thermal top (both blue)for £3.20 each.
Have tried them out and they are very very warm. Ok, they don't look too pretty what with me being a girl and all that. But it will help me in my quest to keep the heating off until absolutely neccessary.

Thanks for that, la farfallina! We have an Ethel Austin's near us and OH is a thermal/long-john fan. DD normally buys them for him for Christmas, but won't go amiss to get him some before then.0

Our bedroom curtains aren't lined and we have double glazing but you can def feel the cold coming through the glass.
So, I got one of the large fleeces that I bought a while ago from Dunhelm Mill and pinned it to the curtains using safety pins.
It makes the room a eck of a lot darker and keeps the cold out.
Just means I have to unpin and pin which isn't too bad as 3 safety pins keep it really secure.0 -
I am wearing the said thermals as we speak and am as warm as toast even though the heating is off.
Quite frankly, I look ridiculous and hope that no one reports me to Gok, Trinny or Suzannah.
Don't suppose they have to worry too much about heating bills though.

There was me last night thinking how clever I am being preparing for winter and hung a curtain over the front door to keep any drafts out.
OH got up this morning and said have a look at what that curtain has done. Where I'd shut it last night it must of kept the heat in the hall (although CH not on yet) but there was water from condensation running down the whole of the front door and the hall carpet beneath the door was damp
Didn't expect that to happen.
Has this normally happened to anyone else and how do you get around reducing the condensation?0 -
That happens to me as well. I have a wooden front door and laminate flooring so its like an ice-rink some mornings! I'm going to try that double glazing film over the back of my door and I use a fleece draught excluder which seems to soak up most of the moisture. I just air it out occasionally so it doesn't go icky.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0

am hoping to be able to afford some new windows soon but can't face all the disruption of having them replaced at the moment.

Hi Oystercatcher,
we get condensation between the panels on ours too. It happens on 2 of the biggest windows.
If the frames are ok then you could have the glass sealed units replaced instead of the whole windows, very quick and no mess. The old panel is lifted out and a new one put in, very quick if the frames are upvc, if they`re wooden it shouldn`t be much more fuss really. We are hoping to have this done next year.

Hi, Oystercatcher and Sunnyday
We had this happen to three of the pretty d/g stained glass fanlight units in our conservatory. We contacted a local firm (the company that installed the conservatory went bust a while back  ) and they came, removed the panes of glass, put temporary ones in and returned about four days later having regassed and sealed the stained glass units.
It was a really quick job too. They did a whole lot of other work at the same time -replaced seven broken hinges on some old d/g windows, replaced three d/g units in the conservatory with insulated white panels for privacy and fitted new hinges on two of the conservatory windows to limit how far they can be opened initially (so we can have the windows open but our indoor cats won't be able to get out). The bill wasn't broken down so I can't say how much the regassing/resealing cost but the whole bill incl. VAT was less than £700.00

Thanks Sunnyday , the frames aren't in very good condition though. I moved here nine years ago and they were pretty battered then and obviously the cheapest sort you could buy. They don't have a ventilation setting for the fanlights and no air vents, so I'll be glad to replace them with some decent frames eventually. At the moment they don't let draughts or water in, they just look awful so I don't have a problem with waiting another year or so and then getting them done really nicely.
