Thanks! I had new double glazing put in last year, and its very good, but at the same time the plastic whatnot that kept the curtain on the track broke. I think I'd better either get it replaced or get new tracks. The curtains are lined, and the window is massive, so that should help. Other windows.... some of them don't even have curtains *up*. Oh dear.... :o

All this talk over fuel poverty and helping people on low incomes/benefit to heat their homes etc---we phoned the council last week to ask about getting double glazing and they said "Ohhh nooo! Not for years & years !"
  • I think the way to tell if the cold is getting in is to see if it feels colder near the windows. We have double glazing , some of it very old so probably not as efficiant as it could be. I can certainly feel the cold coming towards me from the windows, not a draught as they are sealed but there's a definite 'convection' of coldness going into the room .
There's just something cosy about shutting out the dark on a winters night. I feel terribly exposed when I have a big black uncovered window in the room!

I think even net curtains help keep a layer of cold back even though they look terrible .

    (OK OK I know I'm weird !! )

I havent got any curtains that shut completely, just halfway (Ikea are amazing but not wide enough for big windows :)..).... we arent overlooked at all apart from the sheep and they arent very nosy. Blind in the bathroom & in the bedroom we just walk around in the dark LOL. I have nagged OH to bubblewrap the back door (all glass) and larder window, cos thats the cold side of the house.

Oystercatcher, I'm with you, certainly on single glazed windows. And certainly it *feels* cosier to have curtains. And there's the privacy issue, I don't like being visible, even tho I live on such a quiet street.

EDIT: another thing about these new double glazed windows of mine.... a couple of times now, they've had condensation on the *outside* in the morning. Is that good, bad or indifferent, does anyone know? Its got me a bit confused, I must say.

Ooh, yes - we get this, but only in the conservatory. I'd love to know why it is happening!

Today, by happy accident, I found some bamboo Tshirts for sale! Been looking for bamboo blankets (especially) for ages and couldn't find any. Then, just in the middle of nowhere having a bun and coffee and there was a cabinet full of Tshirts, towels and socks. I am now wearing the long-sleeved Tshirt and it's incredibly cosy, just as well with the promised Artic weather heading our way.
  • I get condensation 'between' the panels on my double glazing :( am hoping to be able to afford some new windows soon but can't face all the disruption of having them replaced at the moment.
