Oh my... Its 6.26pm and its been that cold today that I've not opened the curtains in the living room or bedroom!!!

Can I just ask what is the safest way to use candles?
I've got loads of tea light candles and can only really put them on the fire place so any ideas?

Or shall I buy some proper candles?

    ;)
  • Where has everyone been, nobody has posted since the end of August???

Don't mean to be nosey.....just thought you'd all gone into hibernation!!!!!!

Re: draughts around kitchen cupboards...we have a draught that comes over the top of our washing machine!
However, my DH (a brickie) reckons that a house needs some draughts!!!! I agree to a certain extent but am still preparing for winter. (Been spurred on by horrible letter from Powergen this morning, wanting more money! Details on Ferkin Powergen thread)
Got a curtain track for my door curtain!
Bought heavyweight curtains for hall & landing (getting rid of blinds)
Thats pretty much it for now. Think we'll have to light the fire tonight! Not giving Powergen any more money by putting heating on!!!!

I have some small glass 'pots' which are tea light holders, these would be small enough to sit on a mantel - try the £1 shop? or maybe use some small pretty glass or china dishes to sit them in? I use proper candles in some good old fashioned candle holders - my favourite are wee willie winkie types which are very safe (non-tip-up-able) ;)

yes you do need some air circulating through but if its a big draught you're paying more money for heating to counter act it. Bring on the bluetac I say!! :D

  • Well i must admit i have done bu@@er all since my last post too. i went to a laundrette to see about getting the old duvets etc washed and dried and the woman basically said its cheaper to buy new ones from wilkinsons or woolies so figure i might do that - then black bag them at the end of this winter and air them again later on for next year. need to get some sealent for the gaps in the windows, mine are terrible - will definately be having a go at that at some point this week when little one is in school. Fleece blankets for the sofas are to be washed this week, so is the dogs bed but that will be the last thign for this year. Am going to try making rice bags this year once i figure out how to thread the machine!!! lost the stupid instructions adn now cant thread it. Have got to clean down two draught excluders and make some sort of other curtain to go in the small alcove near the front door or over the letterbox to stop the draught so my dog doesnt get cold this winter. dammit ive got a busy week as it was ferkin freezing this morning in south wales
    Time to find me again

I love this thread, mainly because I usually hate winter, but now I can see reasons to look forward to it with all the talk of snuggling up on the sofa and lots of comfort food!
This year I'm going to follow the example of someone I work with who gave all the adults on her Christmas list a small home-made Christmas cake, and home made jam, mincemeat and chutney. She said that everyone she gave these gifts to was really pleased. Beats socks and hankies any day!

well i have started my christmas cake today, fruit is soaking overnight in brandy.
as for draft excluders, last year a sewed 2 pillows together end to end and then folded them in half and sewed the edges together. i covered them in some old fabric and bobs your uncle job done.
bought a new quilt earlier in the year and it's an all seasons one, one thin one, one thicker one and you button them together for a heavy winter one. it was reduced from £60 to £20 in debenhams and is very warm (and heavy!!) in the winter.

One other thing I'm doing for winter is to get my projects sorted - patchwork, rag rugs, knitting, sewing and paper craft. I've listed them all, listed all the stuff I need and got nearly all of it ready; I was given a huge bag of old cotton tshirts last week which will be great for rag rugs - lovely washable stuff!!

Also got knitting ready and lots of free patterns - going to try some legwarmers (NOT to wear outside the house  I hasten to add!) and making lots of totes for pressies, maybe some for charity sale.

I have a couple of art projects on the go - an oil painting of my dgd and I'm also making a sketch journal - and I have a nice stack of old videos and dvds to watch and some interesting books!!

    Winter? Bring it on!!!

oops just remembered I still need to sort out my old quilt to use as a mattress topper so I'm off to totally mess up my lovely tidy airing cupboard!

    Later! ;)
