I forgot to mention this when I pm'd the instructions to people who asked

    - I used a catering size tin (tomatoes from morrisons - cost about £1.60 I think); that takes 5 ordinary household candles and gives out a fair bit of heat.

    - use an old saucepan as the flames will mark it badly - I have a medium size one I keep specifically for this

    - I stand it on the draining board or in the sink - dont want wax seeping through the nail holes onto my worktop!

    hth ;)

Really silly question but do candles just produce light or do/can they also produce heat?

They produce heat too, thats how the candle stove works! about 5 household candles produce enough heat to boil water for a cuppa etc. and do it quite quickly.

there are instructions on the net to make a little heater to carry in the car, using a tea light candle and an empty (washed!) tuna tin. its one of the things suggested for Americans to carry in their car for winter emergencies!

Thanks... I feel really silly asking that but I've never really used candles so I thought that this year I can use a few on the fire place if they generate heat- every little helps ;)

We have a neat little camping stove that has a slim gas cannister to drive it. It is great for power cuts. Any ideas about a light that isn't a candle - I'm not struck on them, though I have an emergency one in a jam jar which makes a kind of lamp?

At the risk of sounding totally nuts but I think (for me) theres a pscyhological (sp?) warming effect of having candles burning. Or maybe its just me. There's just something so cosy about candles burning, no lights on and just snuggling on the sofa all toastie like. Somebody please support me with this, anybody, lol.

For my husband's 30 something birthday (can't remember exactly which one) I decided to put that number of candles on his cake. I really had trouble getting near the cake to finish lighting them because of the heat coming off them! Definitely better to buy the candles which are number-shaped.

Someone else mentioned the cosiness of candles. I agree, and they are (or can be) very romantic too. I keep hinting to my dh that I would really like a romantic candle lit dinner for two as a surprise. Sadly he can't actually cook so that's a non-starter. I could do it myself, but it's a bit like having to make your own birthday cake.
