report tax evasion

Sometimes, I buy takeaway from a specific restaurant and I notice that he never accept card payments and he never uses a cashier machine to give me a receipt. Is it possible that he doesn't pay the sales tax to the state? If yes, is there an anonymous place to report him?

  • It is possible he only accepts cash as it costs money to take cards which would mean putting his prices up.
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • Its difficult to get a cash register in the delivery car...

Many European restaurants only take cash. Maybe they all evade tax too.

The UK doesn't have a sales tax. Which country are you in?

    UK.....

Are you sure there is no VAT (A value-added tax (VAT) or also General Sales tax (GST) is a form of consumption tax.)? Why am I paying it then everywhere?

Where did I say delivery? I said takeaway from the restaurant, not delivery.

He accepts only cash, but he doesn't give receipt. How does the government gets its tax? How is the sale registered?

HMRC Audit teams regularly do "mystery purchases" in cash businesses. so leave it to the experts is my view.

However, if you really want to get your favourite takeaway nabbed then I am sure there is a confidential line at HMRC. Did you have a look at the website? They used to be called "Good citizen reports", you know when someone rats out someone else. But off you go. I am sure it will make you feel better.

It's the banks and big business I would love to strangle. But all their tax affairs are wedged into Avoidance schemes, which are TOTALLY legitimate.

I know it's not right to evade tax, but you do not have any proof, and I would suggest you pick your battles wisely.

Lots of cash businesses will give a receipt if you ask for one. Why don't you do that? And of course they will not issue one if they can get away with it too! That really is the nature of businesses that can operate on a cash basis.

I hope you enjoyed your grub anyway!
  • Dear melanzana, you use derogatory terms like nab, rat out, etc. Why that? Is being a rat something bad? Instead I think I should be praised to snitch a potential tax evader and save state's money.

Yes of course you should be praised. The HMRC website is there for you with telephone numbers. And off you go.

Did you ask for a receipt?

I don't think you really needed to post here to find HMRC information really.
