Salt is quite an individual think and I think at times there are generational differences. My mum uses salt cooking everything, especially any boiled carbs (potatoes, rice, pasta) whereas I only use it cooking some meals and that's quite sparingly- I like it in tonatoey things as I think it brings out the flavour, as can a little sugar. My MIL recently made some meals for BIL after they had their baby and he said they could barely eat them as they were so salty, but they are like us and don't use much salt. There's ingredients I use more for flavour like spices, fresh herbs and ginger that my mum doesn't. But then my parents eat quite a lot of meat and two veg meals and casseroles that my partner describes as 'war food'. Salt and pepper is often required to brighten it up! And my dad has high blood pressure.

'War food' made me laugh!!! :rotfl:

As an aside, I do wish British restaurants would automatically put a jug of iced water on the table, as they seem to in other countries, but I suppose they won't sell so many drinks that way.

Me too! I always ask, and it seems to amaze some restaurant staff that people actually want a jug of tap water. :rotfl:

They're probably disappointed that people won't pay for alcohol or other drinks.

Oh, I drink wine. I just like a glass of water to be on the table as well.

  • My sister in law eats mayonnaise with everything, even on Christmas dinner. She was embarrassed to ask for it the first time she came round, but my brother explained to the family, and now my parents always have it on the table if she comes for dinner. People like what they like, I wouldn't be offended if someone asked for sauce or salt etc on a meal I had cooked.

I tend not to put salt on my own food, except on chips, not for any other reason than I put a lot of spice mix into my cooking so don't need salt, and I do find processed food or ready meals overly salty. I cant recall the last time I actually bought a container of table salt as it gets used so infrequently, but guests are offered salt/pepper/chilli flakes etc

... I also seem to be the only weirdo who takes sugar in tea and not everyone has it in their house these days. That would bother me a lot more than lack of salt or sauce!...

I only use sugar for baking and so I only have caster sugar in a reasonable sized bag.

When someone asks for sugar in tea / coffee I have to lug the 5 kilo sack of granulated sugar out of the cupboard. We only use it for brewing beer and making jam so to save money I buy it by the sack every now and again.

People look amazed at the size of the bag especially as I then have to try and scoop out one small teaspoon of sugar.

Probably not a good idea - they make habenero sauces look like water. More in the realm of "world's hottest" with reference to Scoville scale of heat. To be used by adding a droplet with the end of a cocktail stick. "Suicide" and "Death" seem to feature in a lot of the names. :o

My husband would happily eat them. I have seen him eat raw chillis seeds and all!

Many years ago my husband got in really late from work and so I offered to cook for him. I made a stir fry and added some spicy 'sauce'.

He ate the entire meal and then mentioned that it was a bit hot. When we looked at the empty sauce jar it said "use one to two teaspoons". I had laced the meal with the entire jar!
  • It is an often told story in our family about the grandfather who, in a very posh restaurant, asked for the salt. The chef appeared with a huge block of salt and a sharp knife, asking "Who asked for the salt? I've seasoned this to perfection!"

However, if staying for the weekend at my in-laws, I always put proper milk and butter into the boot of the car - just in case ( they have some watery concoction and margarine! ) ...and then there's the cousin who serves camels milk - yuk!

;)Luckily they love me enough to let me get away with it - but it took a long time before I could actually let them know!

  • Surely if they are 'friends' in the real sense of the word, they wouldn't mind.
To get offended is a sign of pride. so if they get offended they are too arrogant.
