first decide what you are going to do with the machine

it can be wiped in situ without buying anything, you only need to buy a lead or caddy if you're planning on keeping the disk for reuse

What to do? Music cassette tapes won't ever be worth anything will they? No matter who the band is..

Cassettes won't really, not like vinyl which you may be aware is on something of a comeback. CDs I can't see being ever worth anything but depending on the band I would check your cassettes, for example:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Ultimate-Beatles-Box-Set-Cassette-Rare-/321811028424?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4aed6e99c8

£120 but it is a rare collection.

What you should do is go to https://www.ebay.co.uk, type in cassette then the name of the album, then scroll down and click on Sold Listings on the left. This will give you some idea if it's worth anything.

Heads up - your wet wet wet album isn't.
  • Hi Rachel, I'v read your thread with interest. However, could I suggest an alternative view point?

How old are you? Thirties? Early forties? (I'm only guessing based upon you having bought cassette albums). Nostalgia is something that only really appeals to us as we get older. As I got in to my late thirties, I felt a bit of regret for things I'd thrown out that represented my teenage years. Books, records, even cassette albums can be nice keepsakes to remember as that period of your life moves ever further away. I appreciate that this won't matter to everyone as we're all different. However, you may want to give it some thought before you throw anything else out.

Also, on a technical note, please be aware that an MP3 file, whether it's downloaded from the net or burnt from a CD, will never be the same quality as the original CD. The sound is compressed and loses some quality in the process. Of course, once again, this won't bother everyone. Indeed, if you define yourself as a casual music fan and listen on your phone or via a USB stick, then you probably won't care or notice. However, if you have a good music system, perhaps in your home or car and really enjoy your music, I'd hold on to some of the CD's.

Thanks. How do I wipe it? I've decided whatever is on there I haven't missed so I'm letting it go....just want to wipe it and then get it took away.

Can you dispose of computers at a local refuse dump?

I'm cutting away all dead wood and letting the new shoots grow, lol
  • London Town, I hear you, I'm leaving the CD's and some cassettes until last to think about....though I realise after the conversation I've had here that I'll mainly be doing this because of their sentimental value....and some with signatures on.
  • Looked it up on wiki how. Just wondering if it's a job that will take a long time or is it really as easy as it looks....

    you can use dban

what is the machine, and operating system

it probably has life in it yet if you want to reuse the machine just re-install. The disk will definitely be usable in a caddy, so you could use it to store all this music you are about to throw.

    tips take them

if you're bothered about mp3 quality, (most people can't tell) then cd can be ripped into lossless formats, flac and wav

  • bsod, the machine is a Compaq....something or other....I'm useless with this stuff.

To be honest, that's really interesting that I could use the disc again and that it will still have life in it, but I've got this week off and I wanted to get the space created early so I can chill......I've kind of decided that I want it gone already. I have so little space here, if I had more space I'd put it away until I can concentrate on using it.

What is a caddy? Does that mean I could use it without the rest of the casing of the computer? ie plugging it into the laptop that I'm using?

Then left with the question that how many times am I going to listen to that music? Oh dear, lol.
  • I know it sounds lazy, but it's also all covered in dust and I'm allergic to dust and asthmatic. Even if I clean it with a cloth, etc, I will have an asthma attack. I'd have to set aside an early morning to tackle it when I can have all the windows open and then get out for the rest of the day in the fresh air, that's how bad I am. hence it all seems a lot of work. Not meaning to sound lazy though.
