Of course I haven't any "validated research material", but I don't know anybody that hasn't got caller ID. I'm not disputing there are those that haven't.

All I'm offering is a suggestion as to how people can avoid taking these calls if they have caller ID. This is the way I manage them. It works for me, and therefore could work for others. As we know, nothing can be done via TPS etc. regarding the foreign, re-routed calls.

I was also simply offering an option on how to deal with these pests, the advice I was given when I contacted my local Council office on behalf of my elderly aunt, and hopefully diminish the volume of the calls in some way, but you did in fact state the following:-

"Virtually all home phones now have caller ID facility"

I was just curious as to how you came by this 'fact'.
  • I am registered with TPS. Only friends, family and my GP, hospital etc. have my landline number but I still get unwanted calls. I suspect they just randomly dial numbers till they find one that works, an automatic dialler would do this especially in a call centre set up!

Well its a win win for telcoms companies, they make money from the calls, they make money on people paying extra for call ID. BT make extra money on selling a phone which blocks cold callers. Its about time telcom companies as well clamped down on persisted offenders by removing any right to there networks

TPS are pretty well useless. ICO do little to stop these parasites. The phone network is all but useless these days people are fed up to back teeth of rogue companies cold calling and selling your personnel data to anyone that will buy it.

Its getting increasingly more attractive not to have a phone, but we still get the well above inflation busting line rental increases to pay for football

How do these 'random dialers' manage to find the name of the telephone line subscriber?

    See the original post.

They don't in my case. Most of the time they ask for the 'home owner' or it's an automated PPI call. Sometimes I get calls for Mr Patel, no idea where he lives! :rotfl:

I said "virtually" because I don't know anybody that doesn't have caller ID, and I know an awful lot of people.

God, some people could start an argument with themselves in a locked room!

Quite a lot of people won't now have Caller ID by default, as most providers now charge for it (e.g. £1.95 per month with BT as I recall).

A moot point mind, given you're replying to a post from 7 months ago so said poster is less likely to see it. :)
