02037515743 this number called me and was trying to find out about my gas and elecy
anyway I turned the tables on him and started to ask him what he would like me to say and quotes like oo that sounds nice, would you like that, what would you like to me be
He hung up and I haven't heard anything since
What worries me is they knew my name and my private X directory phone number that I never give out.
How did they get that?
Sorry if this is in the wrong place please relocate thanks

No idea how they get numbers - some say they have random number generators that keep dialling till they find a real number - who knows.
Anyway, I've found that if you say (if you're a bloke) I'm so glad you called I wanted somebody to talk to, I'm naked except for the wife's knickers...
They very soon hang up.0 -
If your a member of TPS they are acting illegal, although TPS have no powers the ICO do and, very occasionally fine companies. The law is more stricter this year but i still dont think there strict enough and would like them to ban machines that make thousands of calls an hour
I currently have a complaint with ico about another bogus and illegal company that use this number 0161850813. They try and fail to contact me as I filter callers but I do always complain when companies try as I want them to be closed down. I am sick to death of phone network being abused by companies who dont care how they harass people

When you say you never give out your phone number, does this mean you never give it to anybody including utilities suppliers, your bank, insurers and so on?
This link might be able to give you some clues, or maybe not:

Many of these 0203 numbers are call centres based in India and elsewhere, the TPS can't do anything about calls from outside of the UK I've been told.0

I only give out my mobile number and no one calls me on that.
My home phone is X directory and only family and certain friends have it.Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.0 -
loved the counterscript
Another useful tool is this website that will tell you who called, and what other people know about the caller. A way for annoyed residents to report whats happening.

I wonder if there might be a short delay when you first register your name with BT (or whoever) before your number is made ex-directory, just long enough to allow somebody to find your name and number on the publicly-available databases?
