Lack of publicity over England's shops charging 5p a bag

It does not stop small businesses from charging if they want to so don't be surprised if they do. Why not anyway?I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I had an email from Sainsburys yesterday, informing me of this levy if I do my online grocery shop with them.0

Surely when you tell customers all shops are charging this now-they are unlikely to single your shop out for abuse?!!
You will be surprised on how thick customers can be! Customers have blamed my shop for increasing the cost of the local rag by 10p. Its the same bloody cost if you buy it from a corner shop to the 110,000sq ft Tesco in the county. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. No I'm not at all surprised. Have often had customers ask if they can have another of the plants they bought from us 4/5 years ago, what was it? I don't know say they.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Unless the company happens to have exactly 250 employees redundancies would be very unlikely, and a massive overreaction!0 -
So what is to stop all shops with less that 250 employees, charging 5p and just putting this into their profits.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

The guidance mentioned above says:Dealing with the proceeds
Once you’ve deducted reasonable costs, it’s expected that you’ll donate all proceeds to good causes.
That same guidance suggests that you can find out how any retailer uses the proceeds by asking them:Responding to public enquiries
Members of the public can request copies of carrier bag records. You must provide copies within 28 days.0 -
As its only 5p per bag I think the vast majority of people won't really care. It doesn't have a serious enough financial impact to justify a countrywide public advertising campaign to let people know about the charge.
Anyone who has ever shopped at Aldi will have been paying for their bags for the last few years anyway0 -
Anyone who has ever shopped at Aldi will have been paying for their bags for the last few years anyway
I have noticed very few doing so. Most at my locals have their own bags, dump from trolley to car or, like me, take one of the empty display boxes, which are more robust than carrier bags anyway.
What annoys me is that we will now have to pay out anyway and still use plastic. You pay 5p for a carrier bag which can rarely be used more than once, as it's so flimsy, or buy liners for outside bins or pedal bins. An alternative being going out to the bin several times a day (not good in bad weather or if you are infirm).0 -
First purchase through the till well be a pack of bin liners, which will then be opened and used to pack the shopping."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0
