Then they don't need their attendance further disrupted by holidays in term time.

Indeed. Some people are talking as if pupils' only opportunity to go away is during term-time rather than the three months of holiday they get

In fairness to stu20vt, he was replying directly to this post:

I know but alter ego's post was a tongue in cheek response to the OP wanting even more holiday for kids, nothing to do with teacher's moaning about their lot. Stu20vt chose to use it as an opportunity to try and turn it into yet another teacher bashing thread.

Don't get me wrong even though my dd has medical issues I have never taken her out of school [ until I removed her from a rubbish school].

Some children with anxiety issues /Autism can't cope with large crowds so would benefit from going on holiday at quieter times.

Even in August there are plenty of quiet places. Most of Scotland is empty for example

No. Take your kids on holiday in their holidays, if you want control over term times either home school your kids or set up your own free school with different term times.

So many parents in so many countries would die to have access to the free education our children get and you complain that you cant get the cheapest holidays.

You can go with Eurocamp for £624 for 7 nights for 2 adults and 2 children (4-17 years old) in south Brittany for 7 nights in July next year. Haven't looked at travel costs but was just an example of what you can get.

It's moved on from that to actually discuss the benefits of the education system.

I won't bore you with the details, suffice to say, it's not fit for purpose.

Many people would die just to get to this country, and hundreds do every month. Doesn't mean we have to be on tippy toes thanking the government for all they do.

To me it's grossly inappropriate interference by the govt to have a blanket ban. My cousins in California are allowed to take their kids out (& often do) during term time. The deal is that the kids get quite a bit of homework from their teachers & need to have a generally good attendance record. It's a much more sensible system than the English pure ban.

How can they have a good attendance record if they are often taken out of school during term-time?

Because it's authorised absence. That's the oddity within all this, Authorised Absence. It's fine to have a 85-90% attendance rate if the head Teacher says it's ok. So, it's a lottery.

The key point in attendance seems to be 80-85% for attainment vs attendance. Even our Government figures suggest that this ballpark figure is relatively accurate.

However, I find such studies flawed by their very nature. It is impossible to know how any individual student would have performed (if that's the right word) if their attendance had been higher or lower than it actually was.
